Saturday, May 30, 2009: Festschrift for Thomas H. Shepard, MD. In honor of Tom Shepard’s long and productive medical and scientific career as well as his service to the Department of Pediatrics and Seattle Children’s, a Festschrift Symposium will be held in Turner Auditorium (D209) of Magnuson Health Sciences Center starting at 8:30 AM and will include an exciting list of local, national and international speakers. Speakers will include Mason Barr, Raj Kapur, Joe Siebert, Bruce Beckwith and others. It will be followed by a reception dinner at the University Club (formerly the Faculty Club) on Upper Campus at 7:00 PM. All of Tom’s friends, colleagues, fellows and students are welcome to attend. June 23, 2009: Next Faculty Meeting. 5:15-8 PM in Wright Auditorium. The topic of this faculty meeting will be Seattle Children's research resources for: clinical and translational research, bench research, quality improvement research; and an Update on Department finances. Speakers will be Bonnie Ramsey, MD, Nino Ramirez, PhD, Rita Mangione-Smith MD, MPH, and Erin Allen, MHA. A panel discussion will be part of program with all available Research Center Directors participating. There will be a social gathering (5:15-6 PM) in the Board Room prior to the meeting (6-8 PM). A buffet service of assorted hors' d'oeuvres and appetizers will be set up in the foyer of Wright Auditorium. Childcare will be available from 5:00-8:30 PM. Children must be between the ages of 4-10 years of age. Please let Diane Wade (dmw@u.washington.edu) know by June 15, 2009 via e-mail if you will be using this service. She will need the following information: name, age and number of children and will provide further details once childcare has been confirmed.
July 17-18, 2009: Tourette Syndrome medical symposium. Tourette Syndrome Association (TSA), in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control, will be holding a 1.5-day workshop free of cost on July 17 and 18, on Tourette Syndrome medical symposium (and behavioral tic management), featuring internationally known Doug Woods, PhD, geared to physicians, nurse practitioners and psychologists and counselors. November 5, 2009: The Lana Staheli Endowed Lecture followed by the Annual Work-Life Balance Symposium. The theme for the day will be: Survive and Thrive: Promoting Resilience and Balance among Pediatric Health Care Professionals, and will feature guest lecturer, Dan Shapiro, PhD, who is Professor and Chair of the Humanities Department at Penn State College of Medicine. Richard Shugerman, MD is the 2009 recipient of the Robert S. Holm, MD Leadership Award. This award is to honor a Program Director or Associate Program Director (past or present) for extraordinary contribution in pediatric program director leadership or in support of other pediatric program directors as a mentor, advisor or role model for the many duties and responsibilities of the position.
Harborview and the UW Department of Pediatrics have announced the appointment of Dr. Mary King as medical director of Harborview's pediatric intensive care unit. Brian Johnston, UW associate professor of pediatrics, continues in his role as chief of service at Harborview.
Dr. Christine Gleason, Neonatology Division Head, has authored a new book "Almost Home: Stories of Hope and the Human Spirit in the Neonatal ICU", Kaplan Publishing 2009 April.
Neonatal Fellow Dr. Elizabeth Jacobson Misbe has been awarded a Corkery Fellowship Travel Award to attend the 2009 Pediatric Academic Societies Annual Meeting.
Dr. Heather Mefford’s project “Monozygotic twins discordant for epilepsy: Do CNVs play a role?” was recognized by the Northwest Institute of Genetic Medicine and will receive support from the Nickerson Lab.
Dr. Helén L Dichek has been awarded a $219,330 contract from Takeda Pharmaceutical Corporation to pursue studies on hepatic lipase.
Congratulations to Drs. Pooja Tandon and Vicki Wilkins who were both awarded the first CHBD Hearst Fellows awards.
Neonatology Fellows Jessica Slusarski and Annie Nguyen-Vermillion are recipients of 2009 Pediatric Academic Societies’ Travel Awards.
Dr. Julian Davies was awarded the first ever UWMC Maria Hall award for excellence in patient and family centered care. This was presented at the UWMC annual staff awards banquet.
Dr. Christine Caldwell received the March 2009 UWMC Medical Staff Teamwork Leadership and Caring Award.
Richard Wennberg MD, Clinical Professor in the Division of Neonatology, was awarded a new NIH R21 grant “Risk factors for encephalopathy in newborns with severe hyperbilirubinemia” 5/2009-4/2011, $360K.

To care for more of the region's smallest and sickest newborns, the UWMC Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is expanding in two directions. To better handle current needs, they are remodeling current office space into 4 additional new NICU patient bed spaces to be available by early fall. At the same time, construction of a new wing on the hospital has begun which will include a state-of-the-art 50 bed NICU with estimated occupancy in early 2012.
