top I. IMPORTANT DATES

February 17, 2009: Promotion preparation meeting. 5-6pm, G1026 at Children's. The Department of Pediatrics Promotions Committee requires that faculty members who will be considered in the summer/fall of 2009 for promotion to Associate Professor or Professor attend one of these seminars. If you are being considered in 2009 for promotion (to be effective July 1, 2010), you, your Division Head, and your Division Head's assistant MUST attend one of these meetings even if you attended last year (note, you do not all need to attend on the same date).  For more information or to RSVP your attendance at one of these meetings, contact Diane Wade (206-987-1713 or dmw@u.washington.edu). 

February 26, 2009: Faculty meeting. Wright Auditorium. Social hour 5:15-6pm; meeting 6:00-8:00pm.  Hors’ d’oeuvres and appetizers. Topics will include: Current financial state in response to budget constraints; Reviewing revised departmental promotion guidelines for all tracks and pathways; Building a more diverse department to include recruiting for a more diverse faculty workforce in research and clinical programs.  Please contact Diane Wade (dmw@u.washington.edu) for more information.

top II. FACULTY NEWS

Helén Dichek, MD, has been asked to serve on Special Emphasis Panel, ZRG1 CVS-B02M that is linked to the Vascular Cell and Molecular Biology study section, NHLBI  and will review grants for the NIH this February.

Gregory J. Redding, MD, was elected Pediatric Pulmonary Section Editor for Up-To-Date.

Kristie Bjornson, PhD published “The Relationship of Physical Activity to Health Status and Quality of Life in Cerebral Palsy” in the fall issue of Pediatric Physical Therapy and has been selected as the winner of this year’s Jeanne Hughes Award. The Jeanne Hughes Award is given to the best paper published as a result of work completed while in an educational program.

Jonathan Chalett, MD, Assistant Clinical Professor of Pediatrics, will have an exhibit at the University of Washington Odegaard Library from February 25th to April 30th. The exhibit displays a collection of yarmulkas autographed by celebrities from a variety of professions as well as artifacts, photos, albums, each related to the individual displayed. Jason S. Debley, MD, MPH was awarded a grant from Merck funding a study entitled:  Effect of montelukast on production of pro-remodeling and pro-inflammatory cytokines by bronchial epithelial cells following IL-4/IL-13 stimulation, and rhinovirus infection, in children with and without asthma.  Total costs: $97,518.

Residents Aaron Grigg, Maya Maxim, Lisa Cranmer, and Sarah Bergman will present an abstract, "CHIMPS: Partnering with Communities in Global Health Education—An Experience in Los Abelines, El Salvador" at the global health education conference - Transcending Global Health Barriers: Education & Action, University of Washington April 3–5, 2009. 

Fred Rivara, MD, MPH: The Global Problem of Injuries to Children and Adolescents.  Commentary, Pediatrics, Vol 123, No 1, Jan 2009.  Fred was also recognized in an article in AAP News February 2009 entitled “International report finds distressing pattern of preventable injuries.”

Sheela Sathyanarayana, MD, Assistant Professor, gave Virginia Mason Grand Rounds on Dec. 5 on "Pediatric Environmental Health: Plastics and Potential Health Outcomes".  She also received one of the Pediatric Small Pilot Grants for a project entitled, "Phthalate exposure and potential health outcome in the neonatal intensive car unit".  

Peter Tarczy-Hornoch, MD:  Incorporating collaboratory concepts into informatics in support of translational interdisciplinary biomedical research. Lee ES, McDonald DW, Anderson N, Tarczy-Hornoch P. Int J Med Inform 2009; 78: 10-21. 

Lincoln Smith, MD will be presenting “Transcriptional Analysis of Pulmonary Gene Expression in Adult and Juvenile Mice Treated with Mechanical Ventilation and Lipopolysaccharide” at the 2009 ATS International Conference in San Diego, California.
