October 6, 2008: Fall Pediatric Faculty meeting , 5:30-6pm buffet dinner with the program to follow from 6-8pm in Sound Cafe at Children's Hospital. The major topic of this meeting will include new promotion documents and expectations at the University of Washington School of Medicine, along with small group discussions of our promotion process. This is an important event and your participation is greatly appreciated. Childcare will be available from 5:30-8:30 PM for children between the ages of 4 -10 years of age. October 11, 2008: Seattle Children’s and UW Department of Pediatrics reception at the AAP national meeting, Boston. 6:30-8:30pm at Marriott Copley Plaza, Suffolk Suite. Also stop by Children’s booth 3740 and if you can volunteer some time it would be much appreciated.
October 11 and November 22: Flu vaccinations for children of medical staff and Children’s workforce. This year everyone who works at Children’s can bring their kids to special Saturday vaccine clinics on Oct. 11 and Nov. 22 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the flu vaccine room, W-4861 (next to the Whale Pharmacy). The cost of each vaccine is $20; only cash and checks will be accepted. You will receive a receipt to submit to your insurance company. If your child is an enrolled dependent on Children’s insurance policy through Premera or Group Health, Children’s can bill insurance directly for your child’s vaccine. However, medical staff who have insurance through CUMG or UWPN should plan to pay and get a receipt. Please RSVP to saturdayfluclinics@seattlechildrens.org with the number of kids you’ll bring and which day you plan to come.
Starting October 13: Flu vaccinations for staff. Free flu vaccinations will be offered to everyone who works at Seattle Children’s. You are expected to either get a flu vaccination or sign a declination form as part of your yearly immunization requirements. You can get your vaccination from any staff member wearing a “vaccinator” button or at Occupational Health Services (OHS). For faster service, call ext. 7-2555 to make an appointment.
Starting October 13: Flu vaccinations for patients and families. Children’s patient and family program starts on Oct. 13. Patients will be screened on the inpatient units and in clinic, and household contacts can get their shots in the flu vaccine room W-4861.
October 25, 2008: First Annual Nutrition Symposium, 8:00am-3:00pm. Pediatric experts from the fields of medicine and nutrition will address healthy feeding relationships; guiding parents on infant feeding and formulas; the infant or child who is not thriving; when a feeding tube is needed and how to access consultation and services to make the intervention successful; practical approaches for office visits to help children and adolescents achieve healthier weights and fitness levels; the provider’s role in the obesogenic society; motivational interviewing and counseling. II. FRED RIVARA NAMED RECIPIENT OF CDC INJURY PREVENTION AND CONTROL HEALTH IMPACT AWARD
Fred Rivara, MD, MPH has been named the recipient of the CDC’s 2008 Injury Prevention and Control Health Impact Award. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is honoring Fred for his longstanding and exemplary leadership and contribution to the injury prevention community. Among his other contributions, Fred was instrumental in initiating and proving the hypothesis that bicycle helmet use decreased significant head injuries. He and colleagues used this information to build a community-based program for the original bicycle helmet campaign that has served as a model for similar programs throughout the United States and the world. 2008 marks the second year of the annual Injury Prevention and Control Health Impact Awards. CDC established these awards to recognize efforts in achieving greater health impact in the field of injury prevention; promote best practices and success stories in the field of injury prevention and control; and, Demonstrate CDC’s commitment to achieving health impact. Experts in injury prevention and control and public health reviewed the nominations. CDC will present the 2008 awards on Tuesday, October 28, 2008, in San Diego, California as part of the annual meeting of the American Public Health Association.
Congratulations to Abe Bergman, MD who, with Forrest Gerard, is receiving the Henry Jackson Distinguished Public Service Award from the Henry M. Jackson Foundation. They are being recognized for their work together to craft the landmark Indian Health Care Improvement Act of 1976. The recipients in 2006 were John McCain and Joe Lieberman.
Congratulations to Ken Feldman, MD for receiving the 2008 Ray E. Helfer Award for his lifetime of service on behalf of abused children. The Award is given by the Helfer Society to the physician who has made the greatest lifetime contribution to the field of Child Abuse Pediatrics.
Kyle Yasuda, MD has been elected AAP vice chair for District VIII.
Karen Murray, MD has been asked to be the Principal Investigator for both the USA and European Union portions of the Gilead sponsored study, “A Phase 3, Randomized, Double-Blind Evaluation of the Antiviral Efficacy, Safety, and Tolerability of Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate Versus Placebo in Adolescents with Chronic Hepatitis B Infection”. She has also been elected to an officer position in the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition, as Councilor.
H. Mollie Greves Grow, MD MPH received official notice of award for a 5-year NIH K23 “Enhanced Community-Based Health Promotion Program for Overweight Children” with NIDDK.
Christine Gleason, MD has been awarded an NIH R21 “Neonatal morphine: long-term cerebrovascular effects” 2008-2010, $275K.
Thor Wagner, MD received a K23 from the NIH entitled: Persistent HIV-1 Replication in the Respiratory Tract Despite Antiretroviral Treatment, which will run 2008 through 2013.
Margaret Rosenfeld, MD, MPH has received a grant for Infant Study of Inhaled Saline in Cystic Fibrosis National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, NIH Award period: 9/15/2008 – 7/31/2012 Total award: $1,518,402
Peter Tarczy-Hornoch, MD has been invited to serve on the Scientific Program Committee, AMIA 2008 Summit on Translational Bioinformatics as well as the External Advisory Board, U. of Utah Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CTSA)
Congratulations to Drs. Charlotte Lewis, Benjamin Wilfond, Charles (Skip) Smith, and Brian Saelens who were elected to Faculty Senate for the term September 16, 2008 to September 15, 2010.

Tim Rose, PhD: Jacques Garrigues and Yelena Rubinchikova, in the laboratory of Tim Rose, created the the image of cell surface localization of Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV; pink) on fixed HT1080 fibrosarcoma cells featured on the cover of the September 2008 issue of the Journal of Virology, Volume 82, Number 17. This image was originally created for their article published in the January 2008 issue of the same journal, identifying the cellular receptor for the Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus.
