September 8-12, 2008: Intern Retreat week.
September 15, 2008: Pediatric Small Pilot Project Grant Deadline. Proposals addressing translational research involving any childhood disorder or pediatric antecedents of chronic adult disorders will be considered. September 16, 2008: Children's Hospital Celebration featuring The Beach Boys at Safeco Field. Doors open at 5:30pm, followed by a special program at 7pm and The Beach Boys in concert at 7:30pm.
September 17, 2008: Meeting of Professors and Associate Professors to discuss mandatory promotions. 7:30-9 AM, Wright Auditorium. A continental breakfast will be served. Contact Diane Wade (dmw@u.washington.edu or 206-987-1713) with questions.
October 6, 2008: Fall Pediatric Faculty meeting, 5:30-6 PM buffet dinner with the program to follow from 6-8pm in Sound Cafe at Children's Hospital. The major topic of this meeting will include new promotion documents and expectations at the University of Washington School of Medicine, along with small group discussions of our promotion process. October 25, 2008: First Annual Nutrition Symposium, 8:00am-3:00pm. Pediatric experts from the fields of medicine and nutrition will address healthy feeding relationships; guiding parents on infant feeding and formulas; the infant or child who is not thriving; when a feeding tube is needed and how to access consultation and services to make the intervention successful; practical approaches for office visits to help children and adolescents achieve healthier weights and fitness levels; the provider’s role in the obesogenic society; motivational interviewing and counseling. Dr. Howard Jeffries has been named Medical Director, Continuous Performance Improvement (CPI). Howard will work closely with the CPI leadership to advance the mission and priorities of the medical center. He will primarily focus on increasing physician engagement with CPI, increasing physician (hospital and community-based) education of CPI principles and directing projects that are relevant to clinical practice.
Drs. Leslie Walker and Ray Hsiao just received a $10,000 award (which is their largest grant award) from the Seattle Foundation (the Youth Grantmaking Board) for the “Teens Mastering Recovery – a pilot post-treatment peer support program for teens who have completed substance abuse treatment programs.”
Maida Lynn Chen, MD received a grant award for: “Sleep Fragmentation in Infants with Prenatal Alcohol Exposure” from the Center for Clinical and Translational Research Mentored Scholar Program (2008-2010).
Bonnie W. Ramsey, MD was selected as the Chair-Elect for the CTSA Pediatrics Oversight Committee (POC).
She also received the following grant: CFF Ramsey, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Therapeutics Development Network Coordinating Center. To establish and manage a network of CF Research Centers throughout the US to perform investigational studies for new therapeutics agents for treatment of CF 4/1/2008-4/1/2009.
Sarah Ringold, MD, Division of Rheumatology, received a grant award for: “Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis” from the Center for Clinical and Translational Research Mentored Scholar Program.
David Suskind, MD received an ITSH pilot grant for 24K for Curcumin in ulcerative colitis.
Angela Peck Campbell, MD received an Institute of Translational Health Sciences Pilot Project Award, “Self Collection of Nasal Specimens for Identification of Respiratory Viruses in Patients with Cystic Fibrosis Airway Infections.”
Dr. Shaquita Bell, pediatric resident, was selected for the Academic Pediatric Association New Century Scholarship Program and participated in program activities at the 2008 PAS meeting in Hawaii.
