April 11-12, 2008: The Northwest Pediatric Liver Disease Symposium. The American Liver Foundation Pacific Northwest Chapter, in conjunction with Children’s Hospital, is putting on a 1 ½ day symposium on Pediatric Liver Disease, April 11th & 12th, 2008. The function will take place at Washington Mutual Leadership Center at Cedarbrook. The event will host local (Children’s Medical Staff- Sihoun Hahn, Simon Horslen, Karen Murray, Jorge Reyes, Pat Healey), regional, and national expert speakers on topics of Pediatric Liver Disease. Additionally, Children’s will be hosting a dinner the evening of April 11th for all participants, and there will be a round-table Question and Answer session, over lunch, from 11 AM to 12 PM on Saturday April 12th, at the conclusion of the symposium lectures, for any patient attendees. Registration is free (http://nwped.goliver.org), CME credits will be available.

April 23, 2008: The Personal Genome: Consequences for Society. 7pm–9pm Kane Hall. Reservation required, free admission. Speakers: George Church, Harvard University, Bill Gates III, Microsoft, Inc, Eric Lander, Broad Institute, Leena Peltonen, Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. April 25, 2008: Fellows’ Research Day, 7:45am-3:00pm at SCHRI. Fellows’ Research Day will highlight the wide range of exciting research being conducted by fellows throughout Children’s Hospital. Join us at Seattle Children’s Hospital Research Institute at Building 1 for oral and poster presentations by fellows, leading off with a keynote presentation by Marlene Rabinovitch, MD. Frequent shuttles to/from the hospital and free parking will be available. The event is free and open to all faculty and staff. Please help us plan for attendance by submitting the registration form by April 11, 2008. This annual event is sponsored by the Department of Pediatrics and the Seattle Children’s Hospital Research Institute. top Country Doctor Clinic receives award

The Country Doctor Free Clinic for Homeless Teens received the 2008 Millar Award for Innovative Approaches to Adolescent Health Care. The Award was presented by the Society for Adolescent Medicine at the annual convention in Greensboro, NC on March 29th, 2008. Ann Giesel, MD, Medical Director of the Clinic, and Mavis Bonnar, Clinic Coordinator, accepted the award. They also gave a presentation on the 30+ year history of the clinic.

Brian Saelens, MD, will serve as a member of the Community Influences on Health Behavior Study Section, Center for Scientific Review for the term beginning July 1, 2008 until June 30, 2012.

Karen Murray, MD, has been selected to serve on the Pediatric Transplant Hepatology Examination, Standard Setting Committee, for the ABP and ABIM (American Board of Internal Medicine).

The journal "Developmental Medicine and Child Neurology" is celebrating its 50th year of publication and the editors chose to select 12 articles (one per month) previously published in the journal to highlight with a commentary as a "notable article" in the history of the journal. This month, Jeff McLaughlin, MD's article from 2002 was selected: McLaughlin J, Bjornson K, Temkin N, et al. Selective dorsal rhizotomy: meta-analysis of three randomized controlled trials. Dev Med Child Neurol 2002; 44: 17–25.
