April 11-12, 2008: The Northwest Pediatric Liver Disease Symposium. The American Liver Foundation Pacific Northwest Chapter, in conjunction with Children’s Hospital, is putting on a 1 ½ day symposium on Pediatric Liver Disease, April 11th & 12th, 2008. The function will take place at Washington Mutual Leadership Center at Cedarbrook. The event will host local (Children’s Medical Staff- Sihoun Hahn, Simon Horslen, Karen Murray, Jorge Reyes, Pat Healey), regional, and national expert speakers on topics of Pediatric Liver Disease. Additionally, Children’s will be hosting a dinner the evening of April 11th for all participants, and there will be a round-table Question and Answer session, over lunch, from 11 AM to 12 PM on Saturday April 12th, at the conclusion of the symposium lectures, for any patient attendees. Registration is free (http://nwped.goliver.org), CME credits will be available.

April 23, 2008: The Personal Genome: Consequences for Society. 7pm–9pm Kane Hall. Reservation required, free admission. April 25, 2008: Fellows’ Research Day, 7:45am-3:00pm at SCHRI. Fellows’ Research Day will highlight the wide range of exciting research being conducted by fellows throughout Children’s Hospital. Join us at Seattle Children’s Hospital Research Institute at Building 1 for oral and poster presentations by fellows, leading off with a keynote presentation by Marlene Rabinovitch, MD. Frequent shuttles to/from the hospital and free parking will be available. The event is free and open to all faculty and staff. Please help us plan for attendance by submitting the registration form by April 11, 2008. This annual event is sponsored by the Department of Pediatrics and the Seattle Children’s Hospital Research Institute. Tom Jinguji, MD, was presented with the UW Medicine Service Excellence Award, recognizing his exemplary adherence to the standards for service excellence. Congratulations, Tom.

The Craniofacial Center received a 1.2 million dollar NIH grant to study the pathogenesis of craniosynostosis. Michael Cunningham, MD and his co-investigators Jackie Starr, PhD (Craniofacial Medicine), Mark Rieder (Genome Sciences), Katie Kerr (Biostatistics), and Fred Farin, Theo Bammler, and Dick Beyer (Center for Ecogenetics and Environmental Health) announce receipt of a 1.2 million dollar four-year grant from NIDCR entitled: Single Suture Craniosynostosis: Candidate Gene and Pathway Discovery.

Helen Dichek, MD received a Royalty Research Fund Award of $36,962.00 for her proposal "Investigating mechanisms that confer protection against diet-induced obesity in mice”.

Mark Lewin, MD has been awarded $500,000 through the National Institutes of Health Pediatric Heart Network to enroll patients into a multicenter trial comparing Atenolol vs. Losartan for the treatment of aortic root dilation in Marfan syndrome.

Ed Marcuse, MD, MPH, has been appointed to serve on an IOM Committee to Review the Priorities of the National Vaccine Plan.

Monica Vavilala, MD, Associate Professor of Anesthesia and Pediatrics has accepted a position as Associate Director of the Harborview Injury Prevention & Research Center (HIPRC). In addition to her new role, Dr. Vavilala provides anesthesia care and teaching for pediatric and adult patients at Harborview Medical Center.
