February 4, 2008: Faculty Meeting. Topics include: Improving feedback to students, residents and fellows, and the CTSA and what it means to the Department of Pediatrics. Contact Diane Wade (dmw@u.washington.edu) with questions.

February 14, 2008: NIH Career Development Grant Writing Workshop, 7:30am to 11:30am at Children's in room W3747A. This workshop, by the UW Research Funding Service, is targeted towards fellows and junior faculty planning to apply for an NIH (K23, K01, K08) or foundation career development awards. It provides invaluable advice for writing a successful application. The workshop is very interactive and engaging, and gets uniformly great reviews from attendees. February 20, 2008: Abstract submission deadline for the fifth annual Fellows’ Research Day. See below for information about Research Day, which will be held on April 25th.

February 21, 2008: Promotion preparation meeting, 7:00-8:00AM in G-1026 at Children’s (Please note the change in time). The Department of Pediatrics Promotions Committee requires that faculty members who will be considered in the summer/fall of 2008 for promotion attend one of these seminars (along with their Division Head and divisional assistant).  If you are being considered in 2008 for promotion (to be effective July 1, 2009), you, your Division Head and your Division Head's assistant MUST attend one of these meetings (you do not all need to attend on the same date). March 3, 2008, by 5:00 PM. The Spring 2008 round of the Royalty Research Fund (RRF) proposals are due Monday, March 3, by 5:00 PM.Awards will be announced by June 15, 2008. April 11-12, 2008: The Northwest Pediatric Liver Disease Symposium. TheAmerican Liver Foundation Pacific Northwest Chapter, in conjunction with Children’s Hospital, is putting on a 1 ½ day symposium on Pediatric Liver Disease, April 11-12, 2008 at Washington Mutual Leadership Center at Cedarbrook. The event will host local (Sihoun Hahn, Simon Horslen, Karen Murray, Jorge Reyes, Pat Healey), regional, and national expert speakers on topics of Pediatric Liver Disease. Additionally, Children’s will host a dinner the evening of April 11 th for all participants, and there will be a round-table Question and Answer session, over lunch, from 11 AM to 12 PM on Saturday April 12 th, at the conclusion of the symposium lectures, for any patient attendees. Registration is free (http://nwped.goliver.org), and CME credits will be available.

April 25, 2008:SAVE THE DATE for the fifth annual Fellows’ Research Day, at the Seattle Children’s Hospital Research Institute. This will be a day long event showcasing the research of our fellows, presented in oral and poster sessions. Abstract submissions are open. The submission deadline is Wednesday, February 20, 2008 at 5:00PM. Contact Brooke Freed (brooke.freed@seattlechildrens.org) with questions and to obtain the submission form and guidelines.

top Dr. Arnold Smith rejoins the department

The Department of Pediatrics and Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases are pleased to announce the return of Arnold L. Smith, MD, as Professor of Pediatrics. Dr. Smith is an outstanding pediatric infectious disease physician-scientist, who was a member of the Department of Pediatrics and Chief of the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases from 1979 to 1994. Dr. Smith left to become department chairman of Microbiology at the University of Missouri in Columbus, Missouri, until joining the Seattle Biomedical Research Institute (SBRI) in 2002, where he was the director of Bacterial Pathogenesis at SBRI. He is re-joining the Department of Pediatrics as of March 1, 2008. Dr. Smith brings his very productive and successful research program on the pathogenesis of bacterial infections caused by the etiologic agent Haemophilus influenzae. His laboratory program will be located at the new Seattle Children’s Hospital Research Institute in the Center of Childhood Infections & Prematurity Research, and he will have a joint appointment in the Center of Translational & Clinical Research. Dr. Smith is highly regarded for his extensive expertise in infectious diseases in children, his long and very productive research program on bacterial diseases in children, and his expertise in mentoring young investigators. Dr. Smith is the recipient of the Society for Pediatric Research Maureen Andrews Mentor Award. “Having Arnie Smith return to our Department is like having Ken Griffey, Jr., return to the Mariners. I am very pleased to have Dr. Smith as a leader and mentor in our Department,” said Dr. Stapleton.

Children’s Hospital has the goal of 100% hand washing going into and out of patient rooms. This practice will assure the highest degree of hygiene safety for our patients, families—and us! Please remember to be a role model as we move from our high compliance rate of 85% to our goal of 100%.

The W. Alan Hodson Endowed Professorship has been advanced to become the W. Alan Hodson Endowed Chair in Pediatrics. We are pleased to recognize Christine Gleason, MD, as the first holder of this prestigious chair.

Dr. Jane Burns was selected as one of 7 Culture of Safety Award recipients for the 4th quarter. The Culture of Safety Award is given to a staff member who reports an incident through eFeedbackNOW and self identifies. The winners are selected randomly from the eFeedbackNOW quarterly reports.

Drs. Benjamin Wilfond and Doug Diekema received $57,000 from the Greenwall Foundation and the UW Simpson Center for the Humanities to convene a Working Group to address the “ The Ethical and Policy Implications of Growth Attenuation in Children with Profound Developmental Disabilities”.
