November 15, 8:00-9:00am: Grand Rounds- Renee Jenkins, MD, President of the American Academy of Pediatrics, will be presenting the Annual Humanism Lecture on the topic of health insurance coverage for children.

November 28, 2007- Abstract Writing Workshop: All fellows and junior faculty are invited to attend 8:00-9:30am in M305 (located in the John Olerud modular building). Refreshments will be served. The deadline for submission of abstracts for the PAS meeting is December 4. In preparation for this deadline, the workshop will cover how to write an effective abstract and have time for critiquing each other's abstracts. Please bring your abstract or draft with you to the workshop, with 20 copies to distribute to the group. Please RSVP to Brooke Freed (brooke.freed@seattlechildrens.org).

Jason Debley, MD, MPH, assistant professor of pediatrics, received the Young Investigator of the Year Awards last month from the UW General Clinical Research Center. This award is presented annually to two junior faculty members who have a record of significant peer-reviewed publications and have demonstrated excellence in research supported by the GCRC at the UW and at Children's Hospital.

Margaret Rosenfeld, MD has been awarded first year direct costs $640,312 for a Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Grant: “Infant Study of Inhaled Saline (ISIS).

Amanda Jones, PhD, received the “Teacher of the Year” Award for teaching students in the Pathobiology Graduate Program at the UW School of Public Health.

Soren Gantt, MD, PhD, received the Center for AIDS Research New Investigator Award for his project "Primary Human Herpesvirus 8 Infection in Ugandan Children". The award provides $80,000 over 2 years.

Peter Tarczy-Hornoch, MD, is the Director of the Biomedical Informatics Core of the newly awarded Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) grant for the Institute for Translational Health Sciences (total ITHS award $63M over 5 years). Dr. Tarczy-Hornoch is also the PI on the renewed NIH training grant Biomedical and Health Informatics Research Training Grant ($5.1M, 7/1/07-6/30/12), and is the PI on a subcontract on an R01 titled "Detecting Errors in Blood Labs Using Bayesian Networks" (7/1/07-5/31/09). In addition, Dr. Tarczy-Hornoch has been asked to continue for another 3-year term as a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association and also invited to serve on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Biomedical Informatics for a 4-year term.

The following members of the Neonatology Division were recipients of the Department’s Academic Enrichment Fund: Dennis Mayock, Transfusion practices in very low birth weight infants ($18,000) and Shilpi Chabra (PI), Michael Neufeld, Dennis Mayock, Vitamin A status and bronchopulmonary dysplasia in preterm infants after routine intramuscular Vitamin A supplementation ($22,000).

Drs. Sheela Sathyanarayana and Catherine Karr accepted an award at the joint EPA/NIEHS children’s Environmental health meeting, from US EPA for their UW based Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit. They were selected as one of the ten 2007 Childrens Environmental Health Excellence Awardees. The National PEHSU Network for which they are members was also awarded. http://yosemite.epa.gov/ochp/

Drs. Timothy Cox, Michael Cunningham and Richard Hopper were awarded the following: The Murdock Charitable Trust Award, with supporting funds from the Children's: Value $621,858 PI: Timothy Cox, Co-Pi’s: Michael Cunningham and Richard Hopper. Title: Children’s Craniofacial Image Analysis Center Support to establish a multi-dimensional imaging center incorporating a Skyscan 1076 in vivo X-ray microcomputed tomography scanner and a Bioptonics optical projection tomography scanner (both for small animal research), as well as a dedicated multiterrabyte-scale server for storage and analysis of animal and clinical imaging data.
