October 24, 2007, 5-6:30 PM in Wright Auditorium: There will be a meeting with Professors and Associate Professors on October 24, 2007, 5-6:30 PM in Wright Auditorium to discuss non-mandatory promotions. It was suggested that we try video teleconferencing this meeting to those faculty located at Seattle Children's Research Institute. Soundgarden has been reserved for this purpose at 9th & Stewart. Please RSVP your attendance to Diane Wade via e-mail (if you will be at the Research Building please indicate so in your e-mail) dmw@u.washington.edu. November 15, 8:00-9:00am: Grand Rounds- Renee Jenkins, MD, President of the American Academy of Pediatrics, will be presenting the Annual Humanism Lecture on the topic of health insurance coverage for children.

November 28, 2007- Abstract Writing Workshop: All fellows and junior faculty are invited to attend 8:00-9:30am in M305 (located in the John Olerud modular building). Refreshments will be served. The deadline for submission of abstracts for the PAS meeting is December 4. In preparation for this deadline, the workshop will cover how to write an effective abstract and have time for critiquing each other's abstracts. Please bring your abstract or draft with you to the workshop, with 20 copies to distribute to the group. Please RSVP to Brooke Freed (brooke.freed@seattlechildrens.org).

top Flu Shots Offered to Patients, Household Contacts and Providers

Children's has expanded the flu vaccine program to better protect patients. Flu shots are offered to all eligible patients more than 6 months old and all eligible household contacts (family members, siblings and others who live with patients). Starting Monday October 15, free flu shots are provided to household contacts in a designated flu vaccine room, W-671 . The flu vaccine room is open from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.: appointments are not necessary. For questions regarding the vaccine room please contact: Julie Burns, 987-5812.

Providers who see patients at Children's are encouraged to get a free flu shot from Occupational Health Services (OHS). Flu shots are now available during the drop-in clinic hours from 7:30 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday and from 7:30 to noon on Thursdays. The yearly OHS flu shot clinic for staff and providers will be held from Nov. 5 to 10 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. For questions regarding provider shots, please contact Occupational Health: Suzy Bramwell, 987-6647.

top Richard Shugerman wins AAMC teaching award

Richard Shugerman received a Parker Palmer "Courage to Teach" Award from the ACGME. Ten awards are given annually for outstanding contributions to education. Congratulations to Richard for this well-deserved honor.

Charlotte Lewis, MD has received notice of her grant award for Dental Care in Children with and without Special Health Care Needs. Grant Number: 1 R03 DE017199-01A2

Fred Rivara, MD, MPH has been appointed to the Board on Children, Youth, and Families by the National Academy of Sciences.

Dr. Luke Hoffman has won a 2207 ICAAC Young Investigator Award for his innovative studies about how antimicrobial agents modify the physiology of microbes, particularly Pseudomonas in the airway of people with cystic fibrosis. The American Society of Microbiology and the Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy (ICAAC) annually recognize five early career scientists from around the world for research excellence with the ICAAC Young Investigator Award. Dr. Hoffman is an Assistant Professor in the Pulmonary Division in the Department of Pediatrics.
