CLINIC IMPROVEMENTS

Special recognition in June goes to:
Cardiology – over 51% of scheduled new patient visits were within 14 days - MET GOAL: Total # of new visit appointments = 192
Craniofacial – 63% of scheduled new patients were within 14 days (improved from 44% in May) - MET GOAL: Total # of new visit appointments = 248
Endocrinology – 43% of scheduled new patient visits were within 14 days - MET GOAL FOR 3rd Quarter @ 50%: Total # of June new visit appointments = 110
GI – over 47% of scheduled new patient visits were within 14 days (improved from 44% in May), total # of new visit appointments = 212

Special recognition for median new appointment wait times in June goes to:
Cardiology – for dropping their wait time to 14 days (compared to 20-30 days last quarter)
Craniofacial – for dropping their wait time to 13 days (compared to 20-25 days last quarter)
GI – for dropping their wait time to 15 days (compared to 18-21 days last quarter)
Hem-Onc, ID/Virology, Orthopedics, Psychiatry and Transplant for having YTD median wait times of 14 or less.
Rheumatology for their YTD improvements (23 days compared to 33 days last year)

FACULTY NEWS

Fred Rivara, MD, MPH, has been named the Children’s Hospital Guild Association Endowed Chair in Pediatric Health Outcomes Research. Fred has also been named by Governor Gregoire to the Board of Directors of the Washington State Academy of Science.

Dr. Jane Burns will assume responsibility for overseeing the outpatient and inpatient clinical services for the Infectious Disease Section. Her new title is Clinical Director of Infectious Disease Services. She will work collaboratively with Jan Englund, Director of ID transplant services. Jane will be the point of contact for any issues regarding policies, procedures, and management of general Infectious Disease Services. Her new responsibilities began as of July 1, 2007.

Sam Moskowitz, MD, and Paolo Vicini (UW Dept of Bioengineering) have been awarded $20,000 in seed funding from the Coulter Foundation Translational Research Partnership for a project entitled, "Development of a system to simulate antibiotic treatment of CF lung infection.

Bruder Stapleton, MD, professor and chair of pediatrics, and Ford/Morgan Endowed Chair in Pediatrics, has been appointed associate dean of the UW School of Medicine. In his capacity as associate dean, he will coordinate student and graduate medical education between Children's Hospital and the UW School of Medicine, and research programs for faculty based at Children's Hospital. In these activities, he will work with the vice deans responsible for research, graduate medical education, and academic affairs for UW Medicine. Stapleton will serve as a liaison between UW departments and Children's Hospital regarding educational and research initiatives within the Children's Hospital strategic plan, in close collaboration with Hendricks in his position as assistant dean.

James Hendricks, PhD, clinical professor of pediatrics and president of the Children's Hospital Research Institute, has been named assistant dean of research and graduate medical education in the School of Medicine. Hendricks will work closely with the vice dean for research and graduate education in coordinating research activities that involve UW faculty based at Children's Hospital, particularly in the areas of compliance, research infrastructure, and research facilities. Hendricks will work closely with Stapleton in facilitating coordination of faculty research activities between the UW and Children's Hospital.

Dr. Janet Englund was appointed to the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, beginning July 1, 2007.

Daryl Okamura, MD, has been awarded a 2-year Young Investigator Grant from the National Kidney Foundation.

Dr. John Neff was recently appointed to be a member of a Technical Advisory Panel (TAC) for the National Quality Forum (NQF) project on Priorities, Goals, and a Measurement Framework: Efficiency and Episodes of Care.

Anne M. Stevens, MD, PhD, Pediatric Rheumatology: Arthritis Foundation Investigator's Award granted for Maternal Microchimerism in Pediatric Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)

Bonnie Ramsey, MD received the 2007 Alvin Thompson Award given by the Northwest Association for Biomedical Research on May 15, 2007.

Linda Quan, MD, has been appointed to the American Red Cross Advisory Council on First Aid, Aquatics, Safety and Preparedness.

Sandra Juul, MD, PhD, was selected to serve on the Council on Research and Graduate Education for a three year term.

Richard Shugerman, MD, was selected to serve on the Council on Appointments and Promotions for a three year term.

Kevin Urdahl was approved for funding for $36,896 for his proposal “Induction of T regulatory cells that suppress immunity to tuberculosis by non-tuberculosis mycobacteria”.

Ian Glass and Daniel Doherty were approved for funding for $37,500 for his proposal "Joubert syndrome gene identification using a combination of SNP genotyping and global expression profiling methods".
