BETH EBEL NAMED DIRECTOR OF HARBORVIEW INJURY PREVENTION RESEARCH CENTER
Beth Ebel, UW assistant professor of pediatrics, has been named director of the Harborview Injury Prevention and Research Center (HIPRC). Ebel began leading the center on June 1.
The HIPRC is one of 10 injury-control centers established by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The center's 40 staff are devoted to research, education, and prevention programs aimed at reducing the impact of trauma and improving injury prevention and trauma treatment programs.
Ebel studies injury prevention and health behaviors, and has led research on the Seattle campaign encouraging children's car booster seats. She also led a project examining the effectiveness of booster seats in protecting children in car crashes.
Luke Hoffman, MD, PhD has been selected to receive a 2007 ICAAC Young Investigator Award. On behalf of the Officers of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM), the Committee on Awards of the American Academy of Microbiology, and the ICAAC Young Investigator Award Selection Committee.
Dr. Dimitri Christakis has been invited to serve as a member of the Health Services Organization and Delivery Study Section, Center for Scientific Review from July 1, 2007-June 30, 2011.
Shilpi Chabra, MD, was awarded intramural funding from the UW Neonatal Bioresearch Fund for her project "Prevalence of gastroschisis in Washington State and identification of associated risk factors"
David Loren, MD, was accepted into the UW School of Medicine College Faculty program.
Thomas Strandjord, MD, was awarded an AAP Neonatal Resuscitation Program Research Grant & Young Investigator Award "Screen-based computer simulation as an adjunct to conventional NRP training" for $10,000 7/2007-6/2008.
Peter Tarczy-Hornoch, MD, is the recipient of the 2007 Excellence in Teaching Award in Biomedical and Health Informatics, University of Washington.
Peter Tarczy-Hornoch, MD, serves on the Steering Committee of the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) Academic Forum whose mission is to promote the development of biomedical and health informatics as an academic discipline. The inaugural annual AMIA Academic Forum meeting which Peter has been helping plan is being held at Stanford this year. One of the keynote speakers is Bruder Stapleton, MD who will be on a panel titled "Fostering an Academic Discipline - Lessons from Other Fields".
Dan Doherty, MD, PhD, and Ian Glass, MD have been funded $37,500 by the Royalty Research grant for one year. The project is entitled: Identifying Joubert syndrome genes by SNP genotyping combined with global expression profiling.
New College faculty from the Department of Pediatrics: Ted Carter, MD will be starting as a College faculty member on July 1, 2008. David Loren, MD has been selected for a College position beginning July 2009.
Puget Sound Partners for Global Health's Scientific Review Committee recently approved Dr. Allison Eddy’s pilot project, Impact of Kidney Dysfunction on Mortality Rates in Ugandan Children Hospitalized with Acute Infections, for funding in the amount of $75,000.
Janet Englund, MD has been accepted as a member on the ACIP (Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices) starting July 1, 2007, and will be chairman of the HPV vaccine committee.
Rob Mazor, MD has been selected as site co-PI for the Berlin Heart EXCOR® Pediatric VAD Trial.
Dr. Jackie Starr’s R01 on Craniofacial Microsomia was funded: R01 DE 017421 (Starr, PI) NIH NIDCR. "Craniofacial Microsomia and Genetic Variation in Hemostasis and Vasculogenesis" will address the vascular disruption hypothesis by conducting a case-parent triad/case-control study and will evaluate associations between craniofacial microsomia occurrence and common genetic variants in three pathways involving retinoic acid, endothelin, and thrombin activities.
The CHRMC International Outreach Program will include the Craniofacial Center in its first year of funding. The SmileTrain has agreed to help with the costs.
