November 2-3, 2006 in Bethesda, MD: There will be an international workshop for "Wilson disease and other disorders related to copper metabolism" sponsored by NINDS and Wilson Disease Association, November 2-3, 2006 in Bethesda, MD. Leading experts from all over the world will be participating. Abstract deadline is October 13, 2006. November 13, 2006, 5:30-7 PM, G-1026: Chris Gleason and Fred Rivara give a talk annually for faculty on promotion criteria for different faculty tracks and the promotion process. The meeting will be held on November 13, 2006, 5:30-7 PM, G-1026 at Children's Hospital. This is intended for junior faculty as well as all new faculty and interested faculty so that all can understand the criteria and process. November 15, 2006, 5-7 PM in G-1026: Professors and Associate Professors. The faculty meeting to discuss the remaining non-mandatory promotions will take place on November 15, 2006, 5-7 PM in G-1026 (1st floor by Giraffe Entrance) at Children's Hospital.

November 28, 2006: Abstract Writing Workshop. All fellows and junior faculty are invited to attend the Abstract Writing Workshop on Tuesday, Nov. 28, 8:30-10:00am in M305 (located in the John Olerud modular building). Refreshments will be served. This year, the deadline for submission of abstracts for the PAS meeting is December 5. In preparation for this deadline we will be having a session for fellows and junior faculty on how to write an effective abstract. During the workshop, we will have a short presentation on how to write one, and then critique each other's abstracts. Please bring your abstract or draft with you to the workshop, with 20 copies to distribute to the group. Please RSVP to Brooke Freed (brooke.freed@seattlechildrens.org).

December 18, 2006: "Launching a Successful Career" Workshop. Monday, December 18, 2006, 8:00am-Noon. Center for Urban Horticulture- NHS Hall. In this half-day workshop, 2nd and 3rd year fellows will discuss academic tracks, preparation of appropriate written materials, interviewing do’s and don’ts, and job negotiation skills.The workshop will be lively and include lots of time for discussion. SAVE THE DATE: Wednesday, April 25, 2007, FELLOWS RESEARCH DAY with keynote speaker Joseph St. Geme, MD. Joseph St. Geme, MD is Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at Duke University Medical Center. Dr. St. Geme is a nationally recognized expert in basic research and clinical treatment for pediatric infectious diseases. He has been recognized for his research into the genetic and molecular basis of virulence by Haemophilus influenzae, and has been involved in efforts to create a pediatric vaccine to prevent these widespread infections, which are often fatal in developing countries.

Symposium on Work-Life Balance

Under the planning of an executive committee of Ellie Graham, Susan Marshall, Melissa Parisi, Amy Carter, Heather McPhillips, Abbey Rosenberg and project manager Janine Jijina, a day long symposium was held in the Wright Auditorium on October 11th. Bonita Stanton, MD, Professor and Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at Wayne State University and Pediatrician-in-Chief of the Children’s Hospital of Michigan, was the keynote speaker and participated in the panel discussions. A number of recommendations were generated by the four work groups. An implementation plan will be developed for these recommendations in the near future and will be circulated to the faculty.

Faculty News

Ronald Lemire, MD, was honored by a festschrift in a special edition of Birth Defects Research entitled Clinical and Molecular Teratology. The publication highlighted Dr. Lemire’s many contributions to science and to his colleagues. Contributors included Philip Mirkes, Joseph Siebert, Bruce Beckwith, Daniel Doherty, David Shurtleff, Thomas Shepard, Kenneth Lyons Jones, Luther Robinson and Kurt Benirscke. The publication was edited by Dr. Siebert.

Maxine Hayes, MD, Clinical Professor of Pediatrics was elected to the Institute of Medicine. Hayes, a is main spokesperson on health issues for the Washington State Department of Health in Olympia. She is a former medical director of the Odessa Brown Children's Clinic in Seattle, and has served the state Department of Health for 18 years, including eight years as state health officer.

The Haborview Injury Prevention & Research Center and Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center in Seattle have been awarded a $3.2-million grant to study pediatric disability that occurs after a traumatic brain injury. The study will involve 1,000 pediatric patients at all ages up to 18, from King County, Wash. and Philadelphia County, Pa. Frederick Rivara, MD, MPH, Professor of Pediatrics and Adjunct Professor of Epidemiology, is the study's principal investigator.

The CHIMPS American Academy of Pediatrics I-Catch proposal, "Community Public Health Collaborative in Los Abelines, El Salvador" has been approved for $6000 to support projects in Los Abelines.

Dimitri Christakis, MD, MPH, was recently awarded a four year 2.5 million dollar grant from NHLBI to study an internet asthma management system.

Doug Diekema, MD, has been appointed to the Ethics Committee of the American Board of Pediatrics.

Bruder Stapleton, MD presented the "Richard Sarkin Endowed Lecture on Humanism in Medicine" at the University of Buffalo in Oct 19, 2006. The title of the lecture was “Why students still choose careers in Pediatrics”. Dr. Stapleton also presented grand rounds at the Women and Children’s Hospital of Buffalo on October 20, 2006.

Dan Gunther, MD and Doug Diekema, MD have recently published a paper in Archives outlining a controversial treatment strategy in children with severe developmental disabilities. It is likely to generate much discussion and debate: Gunther DF and DS Diekema. Attenuating growth in children with profound developmental disability: a new approach to an old dilemma.
