Monday, September 25: NEXT FACULTY MEETING- Children’s Hospital Strategic Plan. Contact Diane Wade (dmw@u.washington.edu) with questions.
Wednesday, October 11, 2006: A symposium on "Creating Institutional Change for Work/Life Balance in Pediatric Careers" will be held in the Wright Auditorium on October 11, 2006. The symposium is a day-long event (8:30 - 4:30—lunch provided) and will be an overview of and a chance to break out into work groups to find ways to affect change in four specific areas:(1.) Family Support Structures, (2.)Flexible Training and Work Supported by Efficient Clinical Practice, (3.) Academic Advancement Issues, and (4.)Facilitating Mid-Life Career Change. The Keynote Speaker is Dr. Bonita Stanton, Chair of Pediatrics at Wayne State. This program will be a CME category 2 accredited event. SAVE THE DATE: November 28, 2006: Abstract Writing Workshop. All fellows and junior faculty are invited to attend the Abstract Writing Workshop on Tuesday, Nov. 28, 8:30-10:00am in M305 (located in the John Olerud modular building). Refreshments will be served. This year, the deadline for submission of abstracts for the PAS meeting is December 5. In preparation for this deadline we will be having a session for fellows and junior faculty on how to write an effective abstract. During the workshop, we will have a short presentation on how to write one, and then critique each other's abstracts. Please bring your abstract or draft with you to the workshop, with 20 copies to distribute to the group. Please RSVP to Brooke Freed (brooke.freed@seattlechildrens.org).
SAVE THE DATE: December 18, 2006: “Launching a Successful Career” Workshop. Monday, December 18, 2006, 8:00am-Noon. Center for Urban Horticulture- NHS Hall. In this half-day workshop, 2nd and 3rd year fellows will discuss academic tracks, preparation of appropriate written materials, interviewing do’s and don’ts, and job negotiation skills.The workshop will be lively and include lots of time for discussion. Please mark your calendars now. More information and agenda forthcoming.

Faculty NewsRob Mazor was recently appointed to the UNOS Pediatric Transplantation Committee and the UNOS Ethics Committee. These are both important national committees where Rob will have a voice in establishing policy related to pediatric transplantation.
Peter Tarczy-Hornoch was elected to a three year term on the UW School of Medicine Council on the Office of Research and Graduate Education (CORGE) Committee (2006-7).
Eileen Klein, MD, MPH, has been awarded a grant by the Thrasher foundation for $265,100 to evaluate alternative methods of providing sedation for minor procedures in the Emergency Department.
