Friday, July 14-Saturday, July 15: The second annual Pediatric Bioethics Conference, Current Controversies: Ethical Issues Related to Vaccination of Children, sponsored by the Treuman Katz Center for Pediatric Bioethics, will be held in Seattle at the Bell Harbor International Conference Center. Registration is available online at: www.seattlechildrens.org/bioethics Contact Angel Latterell (987-7825) with any questions.

Tuesday, July 25: Department of Pediatrics Faculty Picnic 6:00-8:00pm at Gasworks Park. Bring your family to see the "Reptile Man". Invitations with potluck assignments have been mailed out. Contact Diane Wade (dmw@u.washington.edu) with questions.

Monday, July 31: New Fellows Orientation, 8:00am to 1:00pm, at the Graham Visitors Center at the Arboretum. The Orientation is designed to provide an overview of fellowship survival skills and to allow fellows an opportunity to meet one another. It has been very well received in the past. While it is geared towards incoming fellows, all are welcome to attend. There will be a reception that evening at Margaret Rosenfeld's house from 6:00-8:00pm. Please help spread the word! Wednesday, October 11, 2006: A symposium on "Creating Institutional Change for Work/Life Balance in Medical Careers" will be held in the Wright Auditorium on October 11, 2006. The symposium is a day-long event (8:30 - 5:00) and will be an overview of and a chance to break out into work groups to find ways to affect change in four specific areas: (1.) Family Support Structures, (2.)Flexible Training and Work Supported by Efficient Clinical Practice,(3.) Academic Advancement Issues, and (4.)Facilitating Mid-Life Career Change.The Keynote Speaker is Dr. Bonita Stanton, Chair of Pediatrics at Wayne State. Faculty News

Charlotte W. Lewis, MD, MPH, had her R21 grant funded: R21-DE - 017364-01A1 (Lewis) Caries prevalence in orofacial clefting: A pilot study for an oral health case management RCT.

Daryl Okamura, MD, has received a K08 award from the NIH/NIDDK for his investigation of the Multifunctional role of CD36 in Progressive Renal Fibrosis.

Ruth McDonald, MD, has been elected to the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) Board of Directors for a 2-year term beginning June, 2006.

Congratulations to Kyle Yasuda, MD, who just accepted an appointment from the secretary of DSHS to be a member of the Title XIX Advisory Committee, AKA the Medicaid Advisory Committee. This is exciting because Mary Selecky, the Secretary of DOH, was also recently appointed. Dr. Yasuda is hopeful that they will be able to impact policy that affects the health status/care of kids.

Linda Quan, MD, is a PI on an AAP Healthy People 2010 grant ($20,000) awarded to Washington State to develop and assess a drowning prevention program for Vietnamese families and children in the Seattle area.
