Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center is one of four institutions participating in a new study of rare genetic airways disorders, such as primary ciliary dyskinesia, which is being launched as part of the National Institute of Health's Rare Diseases Clinical Research Network (RDCRN). Margaret Rosenfeld, MD, MPH will lead the research study at Children's, along with Ron Gibson, MD and Dr. Moira Aitken. Other participating institutions in the network, called the Genetic Diseases of Mucociliary Clearance Consortium, include the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Washington University St. Louis, and The Children's Hospital in Denver. NIH announced the launch of the network's clinical studies, a $71 million effort to address neglected conditions, on May 4.

Fred Rivara, MD, MPH announced that Matthew Kreuter, MD, will be the Pfizer Visiting Professor in Health Literacy from November 1-3, 2006. The grant application bringing Dr. Kreuter was written by Drs. Paula Lozano and Beth Ebel.

Congratulations to Peter Gilbreath, a student from Craig Rubens lab, who was selected as one of the recipients of the 2006 Erling Ordal Undergraduate Research Award.

New Head of Biochemical Genetics

Sihoun Hahn, MD, PhD, currently Associate Professor of Pediatrics and the Director of the Biochemical Genetics Screening Laboratory at the Mayo Clinic, has agreed to join the faculty in September 2006 as Head of the Section of Biochemical Genetics in the Division of Genetics and Developmental Medicine. Dr. Hahn is an outstanding scientist and laboratory director, whose specialty is lysosomal disorders.
