Wednesday, May 17, 2006, 8:00AM-1:00PM, Center for Urban Horticulture: The Department of Pediatrics will be holding its first annual Proficiency in Teaching Workshop for fellows and junior faculty. The objective of this interactive workshop, taught by faculty from both inside and outside the Department, is to introduce participants to different learning styles and offer core principles of teaching and practical tips for presentations in both small and large group settings. The course is designed to be relevant to both clinicians and basic scientists. Please RSVP to Brooke Freed brooke.freed@seattlechildrens.org to secure your spot. Attendance is limited to 40.

Congratulations to Colleen Delaney, MD, MSc, Division of Hematology-Oncology and John McGuire, MD, Division of Critical Care, who are the first recipients of the Arnold Smith Research Faculty Development Award. This award will provide each with $35,000 annually for up to three years or until each receives an independent research award from the NIH or other national body.

Congratulations to Angie Peck, MD, Fellow in the Division of Infectious Diseases, who was honored with the MedImmune Fellowship Project Award and the PIDS Fellowship Award. Both are a testament to the quality of her fellowship projects and her future potential as a clinician investigator.

Congratulations to Nigel S. Bamford, MD, Assistant Professor of Neurology and Pediatrics, who recently had a K02 Grant funded from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS). KO2 NS052536, Presynaptic regulation of striatal excitation, 5/1/06-04/28/2011.

Ken Feldman, MD, has been elected to serve as a member of the Executive Committee of the Section on Child Abuse. His term will begin in November of this year and extends through the close of the 2009 AAP National Conference and Exhibition (NCE).

Mark Scott Smith, MD, received the best poster presentation award at the 8th European Headache Federation Congress held in Valencia, Spain April 26-29 2006.

Charles A. Cowan, MD, Clinical Director, Care Coordination Services at Children’s Hospital and clinical professor of Pediatrics at the University of Washington received the Duncan Award honoring his outstanding work in developmental pediatrics. The Duncan Award is given each year to acknowledge parents, professionals or groups who have made a significant contribution to the well-being of children with disabilities within Washington State.

Congratulations to Jane Burns, MD, Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases, who was recently awarded four grants from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Sandra Watkins, MD, Professor of Pediatrics, presided over the annual meeting of the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology at the recent Pediatric Academic Society meetings in San Francisco.

Christine Gleason, MD, Alan Hodson Professor of Pediatrics and Chief of Neonatology, was elected to the Council of the American Pediatric Society for a six year term.

Faculty Publications

Mark J. Stephan, MD, Clinical Professor of Pediatrics, Division of Medical Genetics had the honor of presenting and publishing the following tribute to Dr. Judith Hall at the Festschrift in her honor at Carmel, CA following the 2005 Western Society for Pediatric Research Meeting: “A Tribute to Our Teacher, Dr. Judith Hall: A Child With the Trait of the Earl of Shrewsbury”. It is published in the Judith Hall Festschrift special issue January 15, 2006, of American Journal of Medical Genetics, Vol. 140A: 156-159, 2006. Judy continues to be involved in teaching and patient care at Children’s Hospital in Arthrogryposis Clinic and she continues to be active in birth defects research and publications.

In addition Dr. Stephan published another paper along with Dr. Robert Puntel, Pediatric Cardiology, Dr. Anna Mitchell, formerly in UW Division of Medical Genetics, and Szabo Z, Crepeau MW, Mitchell AL, Stephan MJ, Puntel RA, Loke K Yin, Kirk RC, and Urban Z. 2006. Aortic aneurysmal disease and cutis laxa caused by defects in the elastin gene. J Med Genet 43: 255-258.
