July 22-23, 2005: The Center for Pediatric Bioethics at Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center sponsors it's first annual conference in pediatric bioethics on "Current Controversies in Pediatric Research Ethics" to be held July 22-23, 2005, in Seattle, Washington. This conference will focus on pediatric research-regulations, issues related to consent and assent, ethical conduct, defining minimal risk, academic and industry relations and conflicts of interest. FACULTY MEETING - June 6, 2005The next faculty meeting will be held on June 6, 2005 (Sound Caf: 5:30-6:00pm buffet dinner; 6:00-8:00pm program). This meeting will address current budgeting issues, improvements in hospital care, changes in Emergency Services and Departmental updates. In addition, the Fellows' Research Day awards will be presented.

Pediatric Residency Brochure Awards: We are very pleased to announce that the Children's/UWSOM Pediatric Residency Brochure, "Cultivating Curious Minds at Work and at Play" has won two awards. The brochure won a Gold Award in the 20th Annual Admissions Advertising Awards, which is the largest educational advertising awards competition in the country. Our entry was submitted in the "Graduate School" category, and was one of the 2200 entries submitted by more than 2000 universities. We were also delighted to win an Award of Distinction in two categories in the 2005 Communicator Awards. The Communicator Awards is an international awards competition that recognizes outstanding work in the communication field. The Award of Distinction is awarded for projects that exceed industry standards in communicating a message or idea. Our entry was one of the 5078 domestic and international entries.
Maneesh Batra, MD, fellow in Neonatology, was featured in an article on international resident travel in the May issue of AAP news.
Catherine Karr, MD, MPH, Acting Assistant Professor in the Division of General Pediatrics, has been named to the AAP Committee on Environmental Health.
Richard Shugerman, MD, Associate Professor of Pediatrics, is the principal investigator of a successful grant proposal from the University of Washington entitled, "Primary Care Diversity Initiative".
Kyle Yasuda, MD, Clinical Professor of Pediatrics, is running for the District Vice President office in the American Academy of Pediatrics and was also quoted in the March AAP news.
Wendy E. Mouradian, MD, MS, FAAP, Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Pediatric Dentistry, and Health Services, received the American Dental Education Presidential Citation. Congratulations for this outstanding recognition.
Sterling Clarren, MD, Robert Aldrich Professor of Pediatrics, will be leaving the Department July 1, 2005 to become Professor of Pediatrics at the University of British Columbia and Scientific Director of the Canada Northwest Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Research Network. A reception was held to honor Sterling on May 6, 2005.
Robert Boucek, MD, Professor of Pediatrics and Chief of Pediatric Cardiology, has been named the Thomas Bradley Armstrong Chair of Pediatric Cardiology.

Douglas Diekema, MD, MPH, Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Interim Director of the Center for Pediatric Bioethics authored an AAP Position Statement entitled "Responding to Parental Refusals of Immunization of Children" in the May issue of Pediatrics.
Heroes in Medicine AwardsOn May 5, 2005, Treuman Katz, President and CEO of Children's Hospital was recognized for his lifetime contributions to children by receiving a "Hero in Health Care, Lifetime Achievement Award" at the Westin Hotel from the Washington Health Foundation. Also honored was Steve Chapman, MD, Clinical Associate Professor in practice in Port Angeles, WA, for his efforts with the Clallam County Coalition for fluorinating the drinking water in Clallam County.
