Friday, April 1, 2005: Dr. Catherine Karr, course director, announces a unique educational opportunity for pediatricians: "Controversies and Advances in Pediatric Environmental Health" This 1 day CE course at the Center for Urban Horticulture on the UW campus will provide emerging data, information & resources from nationally recognized experts on pediatric environmental health hazards. Monday, April 25, 2005: Save the date for the 2005 Fellows Research Day (CHRMC: Wright Auditorium and Board Room). This year the Fellows' Research Day is scheduled for April 25, 2005 in and around the Wright Auditorium at Children's Hospital. The goal of the day is to showcase the exciting research being conducted by the fellows in the Department through oral and poster presentations. This year's keynote speaker and co-moderator is Ed McCabe, MD, PhD, Physician-in-Chief, Mattell Children's Hospital at UCLA, Professor & Executive Chair, UCLA Department of Pediatrics.

The Elizabeth M Campbell Endowment for Excellence in Pediatric Allergy Research FellowshipThe Divisions of Allergy and Pediatric Infectious Diseases, Immunology, and Rheumatology have established the Elizabeth M. Campbell Endowment for Excellence in Pediatric Allergy Research Fellowship. This endowment, directed by Craig Rubens, will strive to increase the number of physician and non-physician scientists across the country who will focus on discovering the biologic basis of pediatric allergy. This fellowship will also provide the support necessary to recruit trainees whose research training will enhance their ability at the bench in the immunologic basis of allergies. Faculty/Housestaff NewsSherilyn Smith, MD has been awarded both the Margaret S. Anderson Award, awarded by the students to the staff or faculty member who provides the most support during their medical years, and the Distinguished Clinical Teacher Award, for her work in clinical education. Congratulations Sherilyn for these wonderful achievements.
Congratulations to Craig Rubens, MD, PhD who has been appointed as holder of the Children's Hospital Guild Association Endowed Chair for Pediatric Infectious Disease Research.
Doug Diekema, MD will become Chair of the AAP Committee on Bioethics as of July 1, 2005. Congratulations, Doug.
Congratulations to Lisa Frenkel, MD who was recently awarded an R01 grant. Project Title: Reservoirs of drug-resistant HIV-1. TOTAL FEDERAL AWARD $1,636,178.
Bruder Stapleton, MD was elected President of the Association of Medical School Department Chairs for a two year term, at the Association's annual meeting on March 7, 2005. AMSPDC represents 148 academic departments in the United States and Canada.
Allison Eddy, MD gave a keynote lecture to the Frontiers in Science Program of the Pediatric Scientists Development Program in Kiawah Island, SC on March 4, 2004. Her talk was entitled "The destruction of a kidney--Scenes from the battlefield". Sing Sing Way, MD, PhD, also spoke at the conference.
Congratulations to Drs. Hans Ochs, Carol Miao, and David Rawlings (co-investigators), who have recently obtained a research grant from US Immunodeficiency Network (USIDNET) entitled "GENE THERAPY FOR WISKOTT-ALDRICH SYNDROME".
Congratulations to Jason Debley, MD, MPH for his grant from the CREFF General Clinical Research Center Award entitled, "Airflow Obstruction and Biomarkers of Airway Inflammation During and Following Acute Exacerbations of Childhood Asthma."
