Wednesday, February 9, 2005: Puget Sounds Women's Pediatric Society's dinner. The social hour starts at 6:30pm and dinner will begin at 7:30pm at McCormick & Schmick's Harborside (1200 Westlake Avenue North, Seattle). Special guest speaker will be Dr Judith Hall. She is Professor of Pediatrics and Medical Genetics at the University of British Columbia and British Columbia's Children's Hospital. Friday, April 1, 2005: Dr. Catherine Karr, course director, announces a unique educational opportunity for pediatricians: "Controversies and Advances in Pediatric Environmental Health" This 1 day CE course at the Center for Urban Horticulture on the UW campus will provide emerging data, information & resources from nationally recognized experts on pediatric environmental health hazards. Faculty Meeting - February 28, 2005: Research Future at UWSOM and CHRMC

The faculty meeting on Monday, February 28, 2005 (Sound Caf: 5:30-6:00pm buffet dinner; 6:00-8:00pm program) will feature Albert Berger, PhD, Vice Dean for Research, and James Hendricks, PhD, Vice President for Research. Each will discuss the strategic plans of the SOM and CHRMC for research development over the next 5-10 years. Ample time for questions will be provided.

PICU - Important Member of NICHD Network

Our PCCM Division and Children's PICU are charter members of the National Collaborative Pediatric Critical Care Research Network. This opportunity should greatly enhance multidisciplinary/multi-institutional clinical research related to critically ill children here and elsewhere. Congratulations to Jerry Zimmerman, MD and the faculty in the Division.

Don McInturff, MD named Idaho WWAMI Teacher of the Year

Each academic year, the UWSOM WWAMI students honor an Idaho physician with the Idaho Track Dr. Judd Lunn Memorial Teacher of the Year award. This year, the Idaho Track medical students presented the award on January 20, 2005 at the Grove Hotel in Boise. They were joined by physicians from throughout the state, Idaho legislators, University of Washington School of Medicine, medical residency program representatives, and Idaho undergraduate university representatives. This year's recipient was Dr. Don McInturff pediatrician and Pediatric Clerkship Coordinator for the University of Washington School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics in Pocatello. Congratulations Don!

Faculty/Housestaff News

Robin Hornung, MD, Patty Hovik, and Arlene Libby of Dermatology were the recipients of the Family Experience Survey awards for "Respect".

Ben Danielson, MD was the recipient of the Charlie Garcia Distinguished Service Award. This distinguished service award was established in 1994 to honor, recognize and commend the contributions of alumni, faculty and mentors to the Office of Multicultural Affairs, minority students and residents, and the community that the University of Washington School of Medicine serves.

Sam Zinner, MD was the featured physician expert for an article written by Jane E. Brody on the topic of Tourette syndrome in the NY Times Science section, Tuesday, January 25, 2005.

Sam Moskowitz, MD was awarded and Exploratory and Developmental Research Grant, that was submitted in response to an NIH Program Announcement (PA-03-171) for Investigations in Rare Diseases. The grant is titled, "Influence of ENaC Regulators on CF Lung Severity" (1 R21 HL079093-01).

Doug Diekema, MD will become Chair of the AAP Committee on Bioethics as of July 1, 2005.

Ian Glass, MD has received a K24 Award from the NICHD for "Genetic analysis of cerebellar malformations".
