Congratulations to Abraham Bergman, MD, Professor of Pediatrics, for getting a grant from the Seattle Foundation. The Seattle Foundation has awarded the 2004 Anne V. Farrell Leadership Grant to Abe and Harborview Medical Center for their Early Learning Referral Project for Children in Foster Care. As part of an effort to improve early learning opportunities for foster youth, Harborview Foster Care Project will, along with the Division of Children and Family Services and Head Start agencies, increase over a two year period the number of foster children in King County ages 0-5 enrolled in Head Start from 3% to 20%. This will be accomplished by establishing a specialized referral and recruitment process. The project objective is to bring about a system change in the local child welfare system that will ensure that pre-school foster children in King County are provided with early learning opportunities that will result in kindergarten readiness. Abe was also featured in the latest quarterly issue of UW Medicine.
