Important Dates

Saturday, December 4, 2004, 7:45am, CHRMC, Rm. G1026: Workshop: "Healing the Healer Using Applied Meditation". Offered by Puget Sound Women's Pediatric Society. This workshop is a combination of presentation, experiential practices and discussion. Participants will have the opportunity to gain the skills of Applied Meditation for their own lives as well as learn techniques for use with patients. Tuesday, December 7, 2004, 2004 8:30 a.m. - 12:00pm in the South Campus Center, Room 316L.: Faculty Development Workshops for the UW School of Medicine, presented by the Department of Medical Education and Biomedical Informatics, will begin in December. Date and topic for upcoming workshop: December 7, 2004: Clinician-Educators: Staying on Track and Getting Promoted. All School of Medicine and Health Sciences faculty are invited to register to attend a 2005 Faculty Development Workshop. Enrollment is limited and registration is required. Sunday, January 30, 2005: A one day PALS Provider course for physicians will take place on January 30th and will be advertised by mail to AAFP and AAP members in Washington in the next few weeks. Go to the medical staff web site http://medicalstaff.seattlechildrens.org for additional information and registration. This compressed PALS course should be attractive to the experienced physician who is in need of PALS certification for practice credentials.

Faculty Meeting - February 28, 2005: Research Future at UWSOM and CHRMC

The faculty meeting on Monday, February 28, 2005 (Sound Cafe: 5:30-6:00pm buffet dinner; 6:00-8:00pm program) will feature Albert Berger, PhD, Vice Dean for Research, and James Hendricks, PhD, Vice President for Research. Each will discuss the strategic plans of the SOM and CHRMC for research development over the next 5-10 years. Ample time for questions will be provided.

Mark Smith, MD, recently contributed a chapter on Chronic Fatigue to the textbook, Pediatrics, edited by Lucy Osborn, MD (a previous UW/CHRMC resident), Thomas Dewill, MD, Lewis First and Joseph A Zenel, MD.

Allison Eddy, MD and other senior scientists authored a paper entitled: "Why is proteinuria an ominous biomarker of progressive kidney disease?" in a supplement to Kidney International, November issue.

George "Tony" Woodward, MD, Sandra Watkins, MD, and Michael Portman, MD, have been elected to the American Pediatric Society. The APS is an elected group based on academic leadership accomplishments. Congratulations to all.

Congratulations to Peter Tarczy-Hornoch, MD, who was just appointed an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering.

Sam Moksowitz, MD, recently gave an invited talk entitled: "CF: questioning the usual suspects" at the annual ACCP ("Chest") meeting, Seattle, WA. (November 2004)

Congratulations to Mark Del Beccaro, MD, FAAP, who has been appointed to the SCOCIT Executive Committee of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Bruder Stapleton, MD will head a committee of senior faculty in the School of Medicine, School of Public Health, and community leaders to establish a Department of Global Health at the University and the identify the first chair for this unique department. Maneesh Batra, MD will be a resident/fellow representative on this committee.
