September 27-October 1, 2004: Intern Retreat Week. Information has been sent out from the Housestaff office about this year's Intern Retreat. Each year, it has become increasingly more difficult to find coverage for our interns. Faculty NewsPUBLICATIONS
July Pediatrics in Review (AAP) features General Pediatrics Division faculty Catherine Karr, M.D. M.S., Julie Bledsoe, M.D., and Brian Johnston, M.D., M.P.H. Catherine's review article is entitled "Homeless Children: What every clinician should know." Julie and Brian's article is entitled "Preparing families for international adoption." Congratulations to all three.
Catherine Karr, M.D., M.S. also has an article in the July issue of Pediatric Annals entitled "Bronchitis poses significant public health burden."
Roger Meyer, M.D., M.P.H., Clinical Professor of Pediatrics and Public Health, has just published a 226 page book entitled "Poulsbo Past Times," depicting early times on the west sound peninsula. The 16 chapters cover the entire spectrum of life from lumbering, farming, fishing and other events from this early Norwegian community on the fjord of Liberty Bay. A special chapter on the Martha and Mary Childrens Home and Dr. Halfdan Slippern touch on pediatric topics of particular interest. The book 's revenue benefits local college scholarship and the creation of a museum in Poulsbo, costs$15.00 and can be obtained from Child &Family Health Foundation, 22125 NE Apollo Drive, Poulsbo WA 98370. Plus $3.00 mailing fee=$18 while supplies last.

GRANT AWARDS
Congratulations to Bonnie Ramsey, M.D., Professor of Pediatrics, who has received a $5 million grant to conduct a 60-site clinical trial of the initial treatment of pseudomonas infection in children with cystic fibrosis.
Congratulations to Danielle Zerr, M.D., M.P.H., Assistant Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases, who was recently awarded an R-01 entitled: "Human Herpesvirus 6 and Central Nervous System Disease Following Stem Cell Transplantation."

EBEL TO STUDY BOOSTER SEAT USE WITH ROBERT WOOD JOHNSON GRANT
Beth Ebel, M.D., M.Sc., M.P.H., Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, has been selected for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Generalist Physician Faculty Scholars Program. Ebel, a researcher at the Harborview Injury Prevention and Research Center, is receiving a four-year, $300,000 grant from the foundation to increase the use of child booster seats. She will research barriers to the use of booster seats and determinants of child passenger safety behaviors in Latino families. Using the behavioral research results, Ebel will develop targeted interventions for Latino families to overcome the financial, cultural, and language barriers to child booster seats. She hopes to improve child restraint practices among Latino families, to reduce the risk of injuries from auto accidents.
Congratulations to Carolyn McCarty, Ph.D., Research Assistant Professor in the Division of General Pediatrics, who has received a Young Investigator Award from the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression. Her work studies depressive symptoms on middle-school children.
