Congratulations to the Fellows' Research Day Award winners
The fifth annual Fellows' Research Day, for the first time at the Seattle Children’s Hospital Research Institute, was the largest in the event's history with over 170 attendees. Congratulations to all of the participants for their excellent research presentations. The following fellows received the Fellows’ Research Day Awards, which are sponsored by the Seattle Children’s Hospital Research Institute:
- Heather Mefford, MD, PhD, Genetics and Developmental Medicine, A novel recurrent microdeletion syndrome on 15q13.3 associated with mental retardation and epilepsy

Pediatric GI fellowship approved by ACGME
Karen Murray, MD, fellowship director and the Pediatric Gastroenterology Division received notice that their fellowship program was approved by the ACGME. This is an important and outstanding development for our Department of Pediatrics. There is a significant shortage of pediatric gastroenterologists in the United States and the Northwest. Our program will offer an outstanding educational and clinical opportunity for future fellows.
Dr. Harris Baden is the first recipient of the Molteni Award for Professionalism and Quality. This new annual award honors a doctor who demonstrates professionalism, accountability, respect, integrity, advocacy, excellent clinical judgment, and a commitment to improving systems of care. Nominations are submitted by the medical staff.
Dr. Ellie Graham received the 2008, MaryAnn O'Hara, MD, Physician Leadership Award on April 30. The MaryAnn O'Hara, MD, Physician Leadership Award recognizes and honors a medical student, resident or physician whose leadership and courage reflect a commitment to breastfeeding as a vital part of the health and development of children and their families. Awardees demonstrate exemplary commitment to maternal and child health through advocacy of breastfeeding education and support in the community and within the medical profession.
Dr. Mike Bamshad and Dr. Peter Tarczy-Hornoch are part of the recently approved $5.8 million, four-year grant from the Life Sciences Discovery Fund (LSDF) to support the translation of human genetic research into clinical medicine. The grant will be used to launch the Northwest Institute of Genetic Medicine, a collaborative effort between researchers at the UW, Seattle Children’s Hospital Research Institute, Group Health and local biotechnology companies with members from pediatrics, medicine, genome sciences, and biostatistics.
David Rawlings, MD, Chief of the Division of Immunology was listed among the top 22 NIH grant recipients by the prestigious scientific publication, Nature. Rawlings receives funding from 9 NIH grants. The list recognizes the number of NIH grants held by investigators.
Craig E. Rubens, MD, PhD has been selected as a Board member to the Board of Scientific Counselors of the Division of Intramural Research, National Institute of Allergy & Infectious Diseases (NIAID), National Institutes of Health for a period of five years beginning July 1, 2008. This Board evaluates the laboratories in NIAID’s intramural program.
Audrey Odom, MD, PhD, a third year fellow in Infectious Diseases, was awarded a K08 grant by the NIH to begin in July.
Jason Debley, MD, MPH, has been awarded a 2 year grant from the American Lung Association entitled, "Airway Epithelial Cell Cytokine Profiles of Children with and without Asthma", with direct costs of $80,000.
Joel S. Tieder, MD, MPH was appointed Chairperson to the Society of Hospital Medicine’s Expert Panel on ALTEs. The objective of this group of international experts (Co-sponsored by the AAP’s Society of Hospital Medicine) is to create a consensus document to promote the evidence-based standardization of ALTE care.
Dr. Andrew Scharenberg was elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation. The ASCI, which was founded 100 years ago, is an honorary society of physician scientists. Membership is by election only, and only researchers who are age 45 or younger are eligible. Election to the society is a recognition of a researcher's significant contributions, at a relatively young age, to the understanding of human disease.
Sheela Sathyanarayana, MD, MPH is the PI on a pilot grant that was awarded from the UW Center for Ecogenetics and Environmental Health for $25,000: Identifying Genetic Variants Associated with Shortened Anogenital Distance and Incomplete Testicular Descent in Male Infants. Richard Grady, MD is a co-investigator on the grant.
Lisa Frenkel, MD will host a summer student research trainee through an award from the APS/SPR Student Research Grant.
Nigel Bamford, MD, Pediatrics and Neurology, received a 1.6 million dollar NIH grant to study how dopamine excess and depletion alters striatal function; a critical area of the brain implicated in movement and habit formation. The five-year grant from NINDS is entitled: Dopamine-Induced Striatal Synaptic Plasticity.

Kevin Urdahl, MD, PhD presented "Regulatory T cells in tuberculosis." At the American Association of Immunologists Annual Meeting in San Diego, April 5-9, 2008.
David B. Shurtleff, MD will present three abstracts to the international Society for Research into Hydrocephalus and Spina Bifida June 11-14 at Brown University in Providence, RI. Prenatal Counseling for Myelomeningocele: Diagnoses, Decisions and Outcomes; Outcome of Surgery for Scoliosis in Patients with Myelomeningocele; and Comprehensive, Economical Management of Cerebrospinal fluid Shunt Infections – A 21 Year Experience.
Erica Freeman, MD, Pediatric Resident, presented an abstract entitled "Identifying Salvadorian Children with Lead Poisoning" at the annual meeting of the Academic Pediatric Association in Los Angeles.
Tom Hansen, MD will give a talk "Identification-Classification of Patients by Underlying Conditions: Implications for Children's Hospitals" at the Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, VA as a part of their epidemiology series on June 27, 2008.
