Department of Pediatrics Leadership in Research

The Department of Pediatric is providing national leadership in Pediatric Research:

  1. Immunology: David Rawlings, MD, Hans Ochs, MD and Andrew Scharenberg, MD have developed a major program unraveling the genetic basis of immune deficiency disorders in children. Studies leading to specific gene therapies are already underway.
  2. Neurogenetics: Under the leadership of Philip Chance, MD, Chief of the Division of Pediatric Genetics and Development, the genetic basis of childhood neurologic conditions are being clarified.
  3. Cystic Fibrosis Research: The Cystic Fibrosis Research team, headed by Bonnie Ramsey, MD, performed the trials leading to a novel method of delivering the antibiotic, Tobramycin, to the lungs of children and adults with cystic fibrosis. This therapy is now standard treatment throughout the world. The group is now focusing on the genetic and cellular pathogenesis of the bacteria infecting CF patients with the hopes of reducing lung infections.
  4. Childhood Injury Prevention: Faculty in the Department of Pediatrics have provided national leadership in the study of childhood injuries and in the methods of reducing these injuries. Major local and national injury prevention interventions have resulted in the areas of bicycle helmet use, water safety, gun safety and seat-belt use.
  5. Preventing Kidney Failure in Children: Allison Eddy, MD, Chief of the Division of Pediatric Nephrology is internationally renown for her research advances on the genetic and molecular mechanisms addressing how the kidney scars after injury. This work from her research group has stimulated new therapies for children with protein in their urine.
