Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship
The fellowship in Pediatric Emergency Medicine is a 3-year program that combines clinical education in pediatric emergency medicine along with an emphasis on clinical research. Our fellowship offers the opportunity to obtain an MPH and all fellows are expected to take classes at the University of Washington School of Public Health. We accept one fellow every year. We use our resources to provide an excellent clinical and research education to our fellows.
Clinical
Fellows have a significant commitment in order to be certified. They will spend eight months per year on average in the pediatric emergency department (during ED months fellows will also participate in coursework and research projects). They also must do at least one full-time month of trauma at Harborview Medical Center, three months of adult emergency department work (at the University of Washington and Madigan Army Medical Center) and one month of pediatric intensive care during the course of their fellowship. They also will take seven elective clinical rotations during the course of their 3-year fellowship (e.g., gynecology, sports medicine, orthopedics, anesthesia, child abuse, toxicology).
Research
All fellows are required to initiate and complete at least one clinical research project during their fellowship. They take classes in the School of Public Health at the University of Washington. Most fellows obtain an MPH degree. Fellows present their research at a pediatric meeting and are expected to publish their research. The fellowship director and fellowship oversight committee monitor progress of research and fellows present their research ideas at division research seminars.
Emergency Department
Our pediatric emergency department is located at Seattle Children’s Hospital that is affiliated with the University of Washington. Pediatric residents as well as some family practice and emergency medicine residents rotate through the emergency department. Our annual census is over 30,000 patients.
Career
Graduates of our program have the ability to pursue careers in academic pediatric emergency medicine and clinical pediatric emergency medicine. The research opportunities at our program are superb and therefore most graduates do opt to pursue careers in academic pediatric emergency medicine.
All applications must be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). ERAS will be open to applicants beginning in July (one year prior to expected fellowship start date). Go to http://www.aamc.org/audienceeras.htm
You will also need to apply to the match through the NRMP (National Residency Matching Program). Their website is http://www.nrmp.org/
We review applications early in September, and contact all applicants in mid-late September regarding the status of their applications. Interviews take place in October and November.
