Radiochemistry Division personnel are primarily involved in research and education relating to new reagents and methods for use in cancer therapy. The research is directed at developing injectable radionuclide labeled biomolecules, or radiopharmaceuticals, that can be used in the cancer treatment approach termed targeted radiotherapy or endoradiotherapy.

The focus of the research at this time is the use of cancer specific targeting molecules with radionuclides that produce particle emissions classified as high LET. In this regards we are developing reagents to carry the alpha-particle emitting radionuclides astatine-211 and bismuth-213 for treatment of metastatic cancer, and for conditioning in bone marrow transplantation. The research conducted involves design, synthesis, radiolabeling and testing of new cancer treatment reagents. As the research is highly multidisciplinary in nature, most of the testing of the reagents developed is conducted through collaborative studies.

The research efforts are funded by the Department of Energy, National Institutes of Health, corporate sponsors, and private donations. We are very thankful for the financial support of these groups.
