Chief Resident |
Radiaton oncology training is broken down into separate rotations. They are:
Rotation Descriptions
DOSI
Dosimetry is a 1 month rotation done during the first year of residency. Working one on one with Sharon Hummel, CMD, our chief dosimetrist, the resident obtains a good understanding of dosimetric principles, three-dimensional treatment planning and linear accelerator operation. Work is done through both practical hands-on dosimetry and written course work.
H & N
Head and neck rotation is done at least twice during the residency. It is a 3-month rotation under both Drs. Austin-Seymour and Laramore treating a mixture of common head and neck tumors and less common salivary gland malignancies referred to our center for neutrons.
GYN
Gynecologic radiation oncology core rotation is a 3 month rotation with Dr. Wui-jin Koh. On this rotation, residents obtain an advanced understanding of the treatment of gynecologic malignancies with a strong brachytherapy emphasis. Dr. Koh also treats GI and lung malignancies.
GYN / Lung
Gynecologic and thoracic radiation oncology with Dr. Michelle Yao. Dr. Yao treats approximately 50% GYN and 50% Lung. This rotation is often combined with that of another attending as Dr. Yao is in the clinic 2 days per week.
PEDS
Pediatric core rotation with Dr. Douglas. Residents obtain an understanding of the principles of pediatric radiation oncology with an emphasis of field design and late effects on this population.
Med Onc
This is a required 2-month medical oncology rotation with Dr. Robert Livingston as preceptor. Residents see new and return oncology patients with Dr. Livingston or another medical oncologist.
B / S
Breast / Sarcoma: Approximately 50% breast patients, 20% sarcoma, 20% TBI and 10% other with Dr. Einck. Includes participation in both the breast and sarcoma multidisciplinary clinics at the SCCA.
CNS
CNS core rotation with Dr. Diaz. Treatment of brain neoplasms including external beam, gamma knife and fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy.
R/E
Senior elective or research rotation done during R5 year. Please see sections on electives and research.
VA
Preceptors are Dr. Kent Wallner and Dr. David Schwartz. Strong concentration on cancer of the head and neck and lung as well as prostate brachytherapy. Residents spend a total of 6 month in two separate 3 month rotations at the VA.
SCCA
Although other attendings spend 1-2 days per week at the SCCA outpatient facility, this is the primary site of practice for Drs. Lindsley and Russell. Dr. Lindsleys concentration is mainly breast cancer. Dr. Russell sees GU, GI and Lymphoma patients and spends 1-2 days per week at UW doing prostate brachytherapy.
