Electives and Research

The UW residency program has affiliation agreements with Overlake Hospital and Medical Center, which is a community hospital in Bellevue, the Puget Sound VA Healthcare System and the Seattle Prostate Institute.  These agreements allow us to complement the resident’s training with experience in community medicine or to consolidate the training they have already received at UW.  (Example: prostate brachytherapy implants at Seattle Prostate Institute or advanced 3D conformal dosimetry training on the ADAC system rather than PRISM) Our elective system is flexible and many have been designed or proposed by our senior residents.  The following is a list of electives that residents have recently done:

Location Elective
UW Advanced Treatment Planning and Dosimetry with Sharon Hummel, CMD
UW Pathology Elective
UW PET Imaging
Overlake Hospital IMRT using the Pinnacle System with Dr. James Pelton
Seattle Prostate Institute Prostate Brachytherapy with Dr. John Blasko
VA Prostate Brachytherapy Clinical Research with Dr. Wallner

Research

Every radiation oncology resident in our program is encouraged to do research and to submit this research for presentation at a national meeting.  Projects are conceived of and accomplished through mentorship by a member of the UW faculty either within our Department or another UW clinical Department.  Research is discouraged during the R2 year because of the depth of clinical information residents are expected to learn.  However, early in the R3 year, most residents become involved in a project.  The 6 month research/elective during the R5 year allows a more focused approach to research.  The following is a list of publications/presentations by UW residents within the last 5 years:
