Several dozen UW faculty members hit the road Monday, June 16, for a five-day trek across the state. See photos from last year's tour in the 2007 Gallery > Several faculty members also posted to the Faculty Field Tour Blog. Check it out >

Background

The five-day, expenses-paid tour is for faculty members who are new to the state and the university. It's a chance to meet other new faculty, learn more about where our students come from and talk one-on-one with university administrators. Why does it make sense to hop on the bus? Here are 10 good reasons:

    10. Learn to pronounce Puyallup
    9. Visit the Eastside and the East Side
    8. Meet organic farmers on the farm
    7. See mountains and deserts in a single day
    6. Visit the towns your students come from
    5. See a Boeing 747 up close
    4. Learn the subtleties of a good Viognier
    3. Have lunch with Provost Wise
    2. Network with colleagues
    1. Relax after spring finals

There are more than 250 alumni of the tour. Here’s what some of them had to say about the experience:

The trip was extremely helpful for understanding the history, geography, economics, and ethnicity of Washington. - Sandra Jolley, Assistant professor, Family and Child Nursing

I hadn’t realized how much the tour would affect my thinking about WA: suffice it to say that I now look at fruit and vegetables in an entirely different way! ($9.99 a pound for organic Chelan cherries? a deal!)… not to mention halibut, aeroplanes, diagnostic testing, parachutes, crude oil, volcanoes, and just about everything else. - Susan Gaylard, French & Italian Studies
