Rethinking the campus map

By Kilian Frey

Last week we quietly launched the third version of our ever-popular campus map. It’s a seemingly low-traffic site, yet we average in the neighborhood of 3,000 hits on an average day. Site visits will even jump up to 20,000+ at the beginning of academic quarters. We are always looking for ways to improve the site as it is not only one of the first UW Web experiences new students will have, but also a great resource for faculty and staff.

In V3, we’ve gone with single “drawer” UI (see below) that contains the building pop-up windows, search box, directions and resources. This creates a single, unified go-to point. But who are we kidding? It’s just prettier. Other improvements include:

  • Reimagined mobile experience and better search interface
  • Updated typography and larger text for today’s modern monitor
  • Animated, imageless building hovers
  • General code improvements for better performance
