Troubleshooting & Maintenance Workshops

As part of the Computing Fundamentals workshop series, LST offers three Troubleshooting and Maintenance workshops. In these introductory workshops, you will learn how to access the computing resources available free to members of the University of Washington community, how you can protect your computer from viruses, spyware and other internet intruders, and how you can fix common computing problems without the assistance of telephone tech-support.  Newbies to the UW will benefit greatly from attending the UW Computing Survival Skills workshop. Those who have recently purchased computers or who are new to computing will benefit particularly from attending the Computer Management and Security workshop, and the Troubleshooting Computers workshop. UW Computing Survival Skills

UW students, staff and faculty have access to a wide array of computing resources. In this comprehensive overview of campus computing, you will learn about the technology services provided by LST, including free web tools, computing workshops and learning spaces, as well as the technology services funded by the Student Technology Fee, and those provided as part of campus computing such as free Internet access, virus protection software, and personal Web space. You will also learn how to store and access documents with SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol) and the practical and powerful ways to manage email.

Troubleshooting Computers

In this troubleshooting workshop, you will learn how to fix common, basic issues with Apple and non-Apple computers. You will also learn about hardware malfunctions, startup problems, the system folder, and common application errors. Bring any questions you may have.

Computer Management and Security

Got pop-up ads? Got viruses? In this workshop, you will learn how to protect your computer from becoming a victim of viruses and other dangerous or annoying intrusions. You will learn how to keep your computer healthy and virus-free, download the free UW Internet Connectivity Kit, and maintain a firewall.

Operating Systems & Networking Workshops

As part of the Computing Fundamentals workshop series, LST offers five workshops on the topics of operating systems and computer networking. In these introductory workshops, you will learn the basics of how to navigate most major operating systems as well as perform most basic functions such as managing files and installing applications. No matter your operating system preference, whether Microsoft, Apple or Linux, LST can help you get started with the technology suited best for you. In the Networking workshop, you can also learn how to set up your own personal computing network or troubleshoot an existing network. Apple OS X

In this thorough introduction, you will learn the basics of Apple's newest operating system. You will learn how to navigate in OS X, and how to perform basic tasks such as managing your files, installing applications, using common shortcuts, and more.
