Web Tools for Learning, Teaching, and Research include the Canvas LMS, the Catalyst Web Tools, SpaceScout, Tegrity Lecture Capture and Tegrity Manager, and ViDA.

Canvas LMS

UW Canvas (canvas.uw.edu) is a feature-rich learning management software, allowing for simplified course management, seamless course calendaring, and efficient grading. Canvas improves communication between instructors and students through integrating multiple tools and methods.

Catalyst Web Tools

The Catalyst Web Tools are a set of Web-based communication and collaboration applications designed for use in teaching, learning, research, and everyday work. Use of the Catalyst Web Tools is free to anyone in the UW community. To access the Catalyst Web Tools, click Web Tools Login and log in with your UW NetID.

MyUW Mobile

The mobile-friendly version of MyUW gives students access to the information they want most while on the go. Using a mobile device, students can:

Email their instructors

Access course Web site

SpaceScout

Searching for that perfect study spot? Do you need a whiteboard, outlet for your laptop, printing, or enough space for you and your study partners? Access to food nearby? Is the library too quiet, the cafe too loud? SpaceScout™ was designed specifically for UW students, so you can quickly locate campus spaces that meet your needs right from your phone.

Tegrity Lecture Capture

Tegrity (uw.tegrity.com) is a video and screen capture tool that also supports importing video content from external sources. Take advantage of generous video storage capacity to create staff training videos, record lectures inside or outside the classroom, assign student video projects, and more.

If you teach an official for-credit UW course your courses will automatically show up in Tegrity, ready for lecture capture, with no action required on your part. If you want to use Tegrity for instructional support or administrative purposes use Tegrity Manager to create Tegrity Courses and control membership.

ViDA Virtual Desktop Access

ViDA gives students 24/7 remote access via a virtual desktop to high-end software normally available only in technology spaces on campus.

How do the Catalyst Web Tools work?

You can create and use the Catalyst Web Tools with only a Web browser. Most Tools have two distinct interfaces: one for owners (faculty, staff, librarians, and teaching assistants) and one for participants (students, research subjects, etc).

Why is UW rolling out the Canvas LMS?

While the needs of UW are too diverse to be met by a single LMS, Canvas can help to create a more flexible and useful eLearning ecosystem that integrates the course management basics of a system like Canvas with cloud tools (e.g., Google) and discipline-specific software from various vendors. Can I use Tegrity if I'm not teaching a for-credit course?

Yes, UW students and staff can use Tegrity! And you can use Tegrity apart from courses even if you are teaching a for-credit course. Log in to Tegrity Manager using your UW NetID to get started.
