Portfolio Transition Guide

Help Center Portfolio Help Center Portfolio Transition Guide

Catalyst Portfolio and Project Builder were phased out in June 2010. The functionality provided by Portfolio and Project Builder can usually be met by other Catalyst tools, other services provided by UW Technology, and other commonly available software. Use this guide to help you get started in your transition to other tools.

Information on how to download content and artifacts from an existing Catalyst Portfolio can be found on the Download a Portfolio page.

Exhibit Work or Reflect on Experiences

To create a personal Web site that exhibits your work, or presents reflections on your work or experiences, you can use third-party Web authoring software or a Web-based content management system (CMS). While these tools initially require more time to learn and set up, they also provide flexible and customizable design and layout. In addition, many free templates are available.

UW-IT recommends Google Sites, an online tool that is part of the UW Google Apps suite of services. Google sites offers a rich, flexible, easy-to-use Web page editor, with many template options. Another option is Adobe Dreamweaver, Web authoring software that is available on many campus computers including UW-IT's Odegaard Learning Commons. You can also download and install WordPress, a Web-based blog and CMS tool, on your personal or shared account.

Share Information and Files with CommonView

If you want to post information and files, such as class information or assignments, we suggest that you use CommonView. CommonView allows you to easily organize information and resources, including text content, links, digital files, and other Catalyst tools, in a single online location for you and your participants or colleagues.

Share Files

Try ShareSpaces to facilitate collaborative file sharing among group members in a convenient online space. It's easy for you and participants to both upload new files directly from the computer and access and download others' shared files. ShareSpaces also allows users to search for files, which makes finding the resource you're looking for a snap. ShareSpaces makes online collaboration more fluid by allowing members to upload new versions of a file-- it also keeps track of the old versions of a file, so if you need to revert to a previous version, you can. You can also share files with the UW Windows Live or UW Google Apps services.

Gather Files and Collect Homework

Use Collect It to gather file submissions from participants online. Collect It also manages assignment due dates, keeping track of assignments turned in on time and late, and refusing assignments after the close date. It provides a centralized location for downloading and viewing participant files, as well. No more visiting multiple pages or digging through your email inbox for files and time stamps!

Provide Individual Feedback

You can use Collect It to do the same. Create a dropbox to collect files and allow participants to submit their work. Then use Collect It's commenting feature to provide feedback on participant work and return a file to a participant. The comments stay with the assignment, which facilitates organized communication between participant and dropbox owner.

Provide Examples and Feedback for a Group

If you would like to provide general feedback to a group of participants, such as in a class, consider using GoPost. Provide examples for the group by attaching a digital file, or by embedding images and YouTube videos directly into a post, and add your commentary. Message board participants can view your examples and each others' posted work, and respond with comments or questions.
