Working With Slides
Creating a New PowerPoint Presentation
PowerPoint will automatically create a new slide show once you open the program. You can also create a presentation manually, and Powerpoint provides many templates to choose from. To create a presentation manually, follow these steps:
- Click the Office button.
- Click New. The New Presentation dialog box will open, showing a list of available templates.
- Select the template you want from the list. If you want to build a presentation from scratch with no preset graphics or formatting, select the Blank Presentation template.
- Click Create.

You can also insert a new slide by following these steps:

Changing Slide Layouts
Powerpoint will automatically give the first slide in your presentation a “Title Slide” layout. Every other slide you add will be given a "Title and Content" layout by default. To change the layout of a slide, do one of the following:
- Right-click the slide you want to change if you are using a PC, or control-click the slide you want to change if you are using a Mac. Choose Layout from the shortcut menu. A window will open, showing the available slide layouts. Choose the layout you want for the slide.
- Select the slide you want to change in the Slide View. Click the Layout button in the Slides group on the Home tab. The button will expand, showing the available slide formats. Choose the layout you want for the slide.
Hint: Be sure to choose a slide layout that is appropriate for the content of your slide. For example, the "Title and Content" layout would work well for a slide with a bulleted list while "Title Only" or "Picture with Caption" may work best for a slide with only an image.
Reordering Slides
To reorder slides in your presentation, do one of the following:
- Click Slide Sorter on the View tab, and then click and drag the slides to their new location.
- Select the Slides tab in the Slides and Outline pane, and then click and drag the slides to their new location.
Hiding Slides
If you do not want a slide to appear during the slide show, but do not want to delete the slide as it may be used in a future presentation, the slide can be hidden.
- In either the Normal or Slide Sorter views, right-click the thumbnail of the slide you want to hide if you are using a PC, or control-click the thumbnail of the slide you want to hide if you are using a Mac.
- Select Hide Slide from the shortcut menu. A hidden slide is indicated in the Slides and Outline pane by a number in a box with a line through it:
To add the slide back into your slide show, do the following:
- Right-click on the hidden slide if you are using a PC, or control-click the hidden slide if you are using a Mac.
- Choose Hide Slide.
