Using The Labs

Help Center UW Computing Survival Skills Using The Labs

General Procedure For Using Campus Computers

You must be a matriculated student at the University of Washington (Bothell, Seattle, or Tacoma campuses) with a UW NetID to use the general-access computing labs. If you do not have a UW NetID, you should set one up. Before you may use the computing labs, you must turn on your Computer Labs service through the Manage Your UW NetID Resources page. Click on the Add or change services link and make sure that the Computer Labs service is turned on.

After your labs access is turned on, you may use any computer in our labs. Use your UW NetID as the user name and your UW NetID password for the password. For a complete list of lab policies, please see our Lab Policies page.

Always remember to log out of your machine when you are done using it! Logging out restores the computer to the state it was in before you used it, which both protects your private information and ensures that the next client has a fresh computer to work with after you are finished.

PC Scanning

Any registered student may use the high-quality scanners in our labs. Scanning takes precedence over other uses of scanning computers when there are other computers available, so in those cases, you have the right to ask another client to move to a different computer so that you may use the scanner. If you feel uncomfortable taking this action, feel free to ask one of the lab staff at the Help Desk to help you.

Although there are both Macintosh and Windows scanning computers in our labs, these instructions refer to Windows scanning. Macintosh scanning is not significantly different, but feel free to ask one of the lab staff at the Help Desk to help you.

Step 1

If the scanner is not already plugged in, plug in the power cable and connect the scanner to the computer with the USB cable. Go to Start > HP Precision Scan.

Step 2

Click the Scan button at the far left of the menu bar located at the top of the window. The scanner will warm up and pre-scan your image.

Step 3

After the scanner is finished pre-scanning, you will be presented with a preview of the scanning bed. The scanner will try to pick the region to scan, but you can resize this area by clicking and dragging the black square holders. If you want to move the media on the scanner, adjust the location of your media and click the Preview button located in the lower right corner of the window.

Step 4

Make sure the Output Type and Advanced settings are set correctly. These settings control options for things like scanning negatives and adjusting the brightness or resolution. These menus are accessed from the menu bar at the top of the window.

Step 5

When the preview looks right, finish your scan by either choosing Accept from the Scan menu or by clicking the green Accept button in the lower right part of the window.

Step 6

The scanner will scan the image and show you its progress.

Step 7

The scanned image will appear in the HP Photo and Image Gallery as a thumbnailed icon. You may double-click on this icon to open up a larger preview which allows you to accomplish further tasks (i.e., rotating the image or saving it under a different name).

Step 8

Click the Save As button located to the left of the preview area. The window that opens has a Save as type menu from which you may choose a file format in which to save your files. For most scanned images, the JPEG type is most appropriate. When you save your image, make sure to save it in a location that will be easy to find later, such as the desktop.
