How To Print to the Lab Printers
There are a number of ways that you can print your documents in our labs, the most convenient of which is printing directly to our printers.
The steps to print in our labs are exactly the same as you would use on your home computer (we just have more printers to choose from). Most applications have either a Print button or a Print menu item in the File menu or both.
Choose File > Print from the top menu in the program you are wanting to print from. The dialog that opens varies in different applications, but in general you will see one of the two types shown below.
Print dialog in Internet Explorer
Print dialog in Microsoft Word
We offer several different printers in the labs, each for a separate purpose. The three most commonly used are Draft, for quick and cheap black-and-white print jobs, Special Forms, for high-quality black-and-white print jobs, and Color for color print jobs. All of these printers are laser printers.
Print jobs are not sent directly to the printers. They must first be "released." If you sent your job to the Draft printers, you can release it yourself from a "Draft Release Station." These stations are distributed throughout the labs and are posted with signs. To release your job, follow the instructions posted by each station. If you sent your job to another printer (such as the Special Forms or Color printers), come to the Help Desk and we will release your print job for you.
Pick up your prints from the Help Desk, where prints are sorted alphabetically by UW NetID into bins. Print jobs are left in the alphabetized bins for one day; at the end of the day, all jobs that have not been picked up are put in a single "One Day Old" bin. After two days, prints are stored in a special "Old Prints" locationplease ask at the Help Desk if you think you left a print job with us for more than two days.
We do offer plotter printing (up to three feet wide and eight feet long) for oversized posters. Because of the special setup that is required, we strongly suggest that you speak to a Lab Consultant before printing to the plotter.
