Will Canvas replace the Catalyst Web Tools?

Help Center Canvas for Instructors Help Center Will Canvas replace the Catalyst Web Tools?

No, Canvas will not replace the Catalyst Tools. They will continue to evolve as a suite of tools designed to meet the general research, communication, and collaboration needs of students, staff, and faculty. As the use of Canvas grows, we will provide a means for instructors to migrate their courses from Catalyst to Canvas. We are also working on integrating select Catalyst tools, such as online grade submission, into Canvas.

Isn't Canvas the same thing as Catalyst?

Although they have overlapping functionality, Canvas and the Catalyst Web Tools are designed to meet different needs. Canvas is an LMS: software specifically designed to support facilitation of a course. The Catalyst Web Tools were designed to meet the needs of staff, students, and faculty for a variety of purposes. The Catalyst Tools are a modular suite of Web applications that can be used on their own or in combination to support the work (and individual workflows) of different members of the UW community. While they do support courses, they also support research, group projects, and collaboration more generally.
