The Learning & Scholarly Technologies (LST) Computing Workshop Program offers seven series of computing workshops. These workshops provide a chance to learn valuable computing skills in a fun, casual atmosphere. Series are designed and taught by our student instructors. These workshop instructors belong to a team of student instructors known as the Instructor Team (“The iTeam”).
The iTeam develops, coordinates, and instructs computing workshops, customized workshops, and UW-IT student-staff training. These positions provide a rich and rewarding employment experience, especially for (but not limited to) individuals interested in careers in teaching or technology.

The Position
This position offers opportunities for substantial self-direction, chances to work alone or in groups, and excellent time flexibility. We encourage and support creativity, and are actively seeking to make this instructor team and the online curriculum an award-winning computing help solution. Instructors have opportunities to develop work experience directly applicable to a broad set of fields, and to help produce a portfolio of materials that will be available online for an extended time.
We are currently recruiting individuals who possess intermediate-to-advanced knowledge on the technologies listed below. Qualified candidates do not need to be proficient in all the listed technologies but must be willing and able to learn new technologies. Non-technology skills such as teaching, writing, and public-speaking will also be evaluated, as they are invaluable to this position.
Required Technical Skills:
- HyperText Markup Language (HTML)
- Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)
- JavaScript/JQuery
- PHP
- MySQL
- Basic understanding of Unix command line and server setup
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with database schema design and normalization
- Experience with development processes
- Interest in working on various side projects
Additional skills
- Excellent time management skills
- Excellent communication and leadership skills
- The desire to learn and teach the best in web tools and skills
- A willingness to develop excellent teaching and technical writing skills
- The ability to teach to diverse audiences with varying degrees of technical aptitude
- Knowledge of Ruby, Pearl, or Python
- Experience working Google Data API
LST Instructors are expected to work (approximately) 15 hours per week throughout the quarter, including summer. Positions start at $10.50 per hour. Additional opportunities to make higher wages do exist on a periodic basis. More details about these higher wages will be provided during the interview.
