Streaming Media URL Reference
IT Connect > Web > Streaming > URL reference
In February 2011, the URL format for streaming media was shortened and simplified. Instead of crafting the URL format based on the account type and type of streaming media used, there is now a common format for all files.
How to Determine Your Base URL
For all NetIDs, your base URL is:
http://stream.uw.edu/uwnetidReplace "uwnetid" with the NetID of the account you are forming the URL for.
Examples
- A .mp4 movie located in the public_media directory of a departmental NetID
http://stream.uw.edu/nuclear/reactor.mp4
- A .mov movie located in the public_media directory of a staff NetID
http://stream.uw.edu/johndough/bakery_tour.mov
- A .qt movie located in the public_media directory of a faculty NetID
http://stream.uw.edu/aristotle/fundamentals.qt
- A .wmv movie located in the public_media directory of a course NetID
http://stream.uw.edu/physics/glowing_things.wmv
Old-Style URL Formats
Note:: Most requests to the old-style URL formats (rtsp://media.depts.washington.edu/nuclear/reactor.mp4) will continue to work. However, rtsp:// links that point to video formats other than MPEG-4 may fail. If you encouter this situation, we recommend updating your link format to http://. Other than with rtsp:// links all other URLs will automatically forward the request along to the new stream.uw.edu servers. You do not need to change your old-style URLs in most situations.
