Why UW Google Apps is Changing

On March 3rd, 2011, Google will begin making a small change to the UW Google Apps infrastructure. Over a two week period, all UW Google Apps accounts will be migrated to a new infrastructure on a rolling basis. During this time, delegate access to email or calendars may be temporarily suspended, but no other service disruptions are expected.

Many Google services, like Picasa, Blogger, and Google Maps cannot currently be used with UW Google Apps. With the migration, Google has made it possible to add these services and others to UW Google Apps. UW-IT is evaluating exactly which services to add, and would like your input. If there are Google services you would like added to UW Google Apps, or if you have any other comments regarding UW Google Apps, please take a few minutes to fill out our online survey.

UW Google Apps will work almost exactly as it has before with a few improvements and changes:

Your UW login works in more places

Google will now recognize your UW login in more places, including www.gmail.com.  Signing on to any of the consumer Google services with your UW email address will automatically redirect you to a UW NetID log in screen followed by access to UW Google Apps.

One account at a time

After the transition, you will find that you cannot sign on to another Google Account in the same browser while you are also signed in to your UW Google Apps account. Multiple account log in can be enabled after the transition using instructions provided by Google.

Change your name for consumer Google accounts

Prior to this change, UW email addresses could be used to sign in to consumer Google accounts, leading to confusion between using UW and consumer Google services. After transition to the new infrastructure, all UW email addresses used to sign in to consumer Google accounts will need to be renamed. If your account is affected, Google will request that you rename it the next time you log in to your consumer account. Visit Google for more information regarding the rename process.
