What is Regional Calling Service?

Regional Calling Service (RCS), the UW's exclusive local calling plan, allows people with a UW telephone (including UW Medicine) to call and be called by more places in the Puget Sound area. All communities in area codes 206, 253, and 425 are part of the RCS calling area.

What's New with RCS Outbound Calling?

The RCS outbound calling area has expanded to include area code 360 communities in the Kitsap Peninsula, Olympia area, and most of Skagit and Whatcom counties. Use the online RCS Checker to see if the number that you wish to call can be reached as a local call when you dial 9 + area code + number. The RCS calling area is now available to UW Medicine phone users.

Placing an Outgoing Call from UW

To place a toll-free call to a telephone number in the RCS calling area from a UW telephone (including UW Medicine telephones):

  1. Dial 9.
  2. Listen for the dial tone.
  3. Dial area code and seven-digit number.
If you hear a fast busy signal, all RCS lines are in use. Please try your call again later, or use a traditional long distance calling method such as the University of Washington Alternative Toll Service (UWATS) or Direct Dial Long Distance.

Who can use the CALL UW feature?

Anyone can use CALL UW to reach the campus operator, individuals, and offices at the UW and UWMC. Services such as Metro UWATS, voice mail access, and modem pools are restricted to authorized UW faculty, staff, and students.

What communities are included in the CALL UW service area?

All communities in area codes 206, 253, and 425 are included. Many communities in area code 360 are covered, including parts of Clallum, Grays Harbor, Jefferson, Island, Kitsap, Lewis, Skagit, Thurston, and Whatcom counties. Visit the online CALL UW Checker for a complete listing.

Where do I find the local CALL UW telephone numbers to dial?

CALL UW telephone numbers are available on the Web at www.washington.edu/itconnect/phones/longdistance.html#calluw/ or by calling toll-free 1-866-5-CALL-UW.

What if there is no local telephone number for my community?

A toll-free telephone number and your UW Direct authorization code may be used to reach UW services if a local telephone number is not yet available. Long distance charges are billed for usage. Local access is provided where technical capability exists on a cost-effective basis. New communities will be added as local services become available.

Manage Your Authorizations (Long Distance Services)

The Long Distance Services (LDServices) application allows you to manage long distance accounts for your department. The UWATS Request Form has been eliminated, and has been replaced by LDServices self-service application. A budget coordinator in your department should be authorized in Astra to use LDServices. If you don't know who to talk to about this in your department, check "Who can authorize me" in Astra and talk to that individual.

Using LDServices you can:

The LDServices application is divided into three main sections: Home Page, Direct Dial, and UWATS.

Authorized users of this application can find the application at http://rome.cac.washington.edu/LDServices

Access To Some Countries Is Blocked

Calling access to some countries is blocked due to high rates of fraudulent charges incurred in long distance and toll-free services. Unrestricted calling access may be granted to departments with a business need on a per number basis. Granting of access will require budgetary and departmental approval, as well as an advanced notice within 3 business days. For further assistance in calling these countries, contact UW-IT at help@uw.edu or 206-221-5000.

  2. To begin using Rome applications (Long Distance Services, Long Distance Billing, and Technology Services and Equipment Billing) you need a UW NetID . If you don't have a UW NetID , learn about Accounts and Passwords here:

    http://www.washington.edu/itconnect/accounts/

  3. In addition, you need to be authorized in ASTRA with the role of USER. The LDServices application requires a separate Astra authorization from the Bill Viewer authorization:
    • The Rome role of 'Long Distance Services Account Manager' gives you 'view and update' into the LDServices pages for the given budgets or organization codes
    • The Rome role of 'Bill Reviewer' gives you 'inquiry' into both the TSEBill and the LDBill for the given budgets or organization codes.
  4. Contact the ASTRA authorizer for your unit to request authorization to use Rome.
  5. If you do not know who to contact, use ASTRA's "Who Can Authorize Me?" look-up service and search by budget number or org code; then select "Rome" from the application dropdown.
  6. You will receive an automated email message letting you know your authorization to use Rome has been processed.
  7. Once you are authorized, go to:

Troubleshooting

Occasionally a security certificate error will show up on the screen at this point. If you receive an error message saying: "There is a problem with this Web site's security certificate", go to:

https://www.washington.edu/computing/ca/

and follow the instructions for installing the UW Services Certificate Authority. Try accessing the site again.

For ASTRA Authorizers: How to set up ASTRA Authorizations

You 'must' setup the 'Astra Role of 'USER' for this person to have access to the Rome Web pages. You have the option of also granting the role of Authorizer but that only controls the actions that people can do in Astra, not what they can do in the Rome applications.
