Digital Scholarship at UW: Register for February 19 Workshop

UW students, faculty and researchers are invited to attend a two-hour “Digital Scholarship at UW” workshop on Wednesday, February 19 at 2:00 p.m. to connect with others on this topic. This is part of a “Collaborating with Strangers” (CoLAB) series that involves three-minute speed meetings to exchange and generate ideas, explore new partnerships or consider a research project. It is co-sponsored by the College of Arts & Sciences, the Graduate School, UW Libraries and UW-IT. An RSVP is requested.

New Look for UW Home Page

UW home page

A refreshed University of Washington home page was revealed in late January, bringing lighter colors, responsive design and improved accessibility. Top stories now have one-click access, with the content and navigation remaining largely the same. A new “spotlight” section highlights UW events and websites, “Around Campus” features news and “Helpful Links” are geared for you. Future upgrades will come later this year. U Drive Electronic File Storage Quota Doubled to 10GB

Individual quotas for U Drive, a personal UW file storage service, are being increased to 10GB per user to optimize resources, enable new uses and meet additional demands for space. U Drive, managed by UW-IT, offers UW students, faculty and staff general-purpose, backed-up electronic file storage that is accessible anywhere, anytime. The previous quota was 5GB. The Student Technology Fee Committee funds the student quota; the cost for the employee quota is supported by the Technology Recharge Fee. Get more information about U Drive.

UW Instructors: Register for New Teaching With Technology Workshops

Registration is now open for a new series of workshops to help instructors better leverage technology to support teaching and learning. Called "In Practice,” the workshop topics include mini-lectures (February 12), enhanced interaction (February 19) and better peer review (February 26). They take place from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in Odegaard Undergraduate Library, Room 220. The workshops, co-designed by the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) and UW-IT, are open to instructors from all three campuses. Seating is limited, so register now at the CTL website.

Canvas, Tegrity, Catalyst and Other UW Teaching and Learning Resources Now on IT Connect

The teaching, learning, and research tools you previously found on the LST website are now on IT Connect to take advantage of its mobile-friendly, accessible design. Instructors and staff can learn how to manage their courses with Canvas, record a lecture with Tegrity, submit grades with Catalyst GradeBook, and more. Students can get help on using course websites in Canvas and viewing a Tegrity recording, with convenient links to MyUW, MyPlan, and SpaceScout. Check out the new Teaching and Learning Tools page.

UW Data Visualization: Free Training Opportunities

Free workshops on Tableau software, UW’s new enterprise data visualization platform, are now available for UW faculty and staff. Tableau Desktop Fundamentals is a one-day hands-on workshop for those who have purchased a Tableau Desktop license. If you are considering purchasing Tableau Desktop or are curious about the ease of creating data visualizations, the two-hour Tableau Hands-on Introduction workshop is for you. In addition, you can learn how to navigate and interpret visualizations in a two-hour workshop using UW Profiles, the Web-based dashboard for exploring basic University data.

UW Wireless: New Authentication Service Will Support Encryption, Better Device Sharing

A new solution for authenticating to the campus Wi-Fi network will enable future service enhancements, including an encrypted Wi-Fi service and better management and sharing of wireless printers and devices, specifically AppleTV and Google’s Chromecast for HDTV content. The change, made in December, was transparent to users; no re-authentication or registering of devices was required. UW-IT implemented the new vendor-supported ClearPass application as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance UW Wi-Fi service.

E-RESOURCE: World Newsreels Online, 1929-1966

Full-run videos of key international newsreels produced during the first half of the twentieth century are available for streaming from World Newsreels Online, 1929-1966, provided through UW Libraries. This collection contains over 500 hours of newsreel content that is instantly accessible on any computer or mobile device, and searchable by subject, year, historical era or event, people, and places.

Use SpaceScout to Find an Available UW Seattle Computer

SpaceScout, the mobile and Web app that helps you find the perfect place to study, now includes real-time computer availability for Odegaard Library and Mary Gates Hall. Just look up Odegaard or MGH study spaces at spacescout.uw.edu and learn where computers are open. Work continues to add more computing spaces with real-time updates. Department IT directors also can send email to spacescoutadmin@uw.edu to have spaces in their area included.
