Technical Update Forums on New UW HR/Payroll System: Aug. 13, 28

UW technical staff are invited to attend a Technical Update Forum to understand the systems being impacted by the UW’s new HR/Payroll system and what you need to do to prepare. Each of the two-hour sessions includes a showcase of the technical capabilities and features available in Workday (the new HR/Payroll system vendor) and information on system configuration requirements and integration points. UW Hosted Microsoft’s Student Tech "Imagine Cup" Competition; Sign Up for 2015

UW hosted Microsoft’s “Imagine Cup 2014 World Finals” student technology competition, which drew 125 high school and college students from over 30 countries the week of July 28, the first time the 11-year event was held at a university. Teams stayed in UW Seattle’s residence halls and used Microsoft hardware and software to develop entries in Games, Innovation, and World Citizenship on the theme “imagine a world where technology helps solve the toughest problems.” Read about the Imagine Cup 2014 winners. UW Business Intelligence Portal Now Offers Visualizations

The UW Business Intelligence (BI) Portal now includes visualizations in its searchable catalog of central reports and analytics from the University’s Enterprise Data Warehouse, enabling users to go to just one location to find the information they need. The newly added Tableau visualizations are of student data from UW Profiles, institutional dashboards created by the Office of Planning and Budgeting and UW-IT. Additional enhancements include new Knowledge Base articles and user improvements for tablet access.

UW-IT’s New Service Management Tool: Check Request Status in Real Time

Beginning July 8, UW-IT will adopt a new service management tool to replace its existing ticketing system and improve customer service and response. When you send email to help@uw.edu and other UW-IT email addresses, you’ll notice the response is a bit different. It will include a confirmation with a link to check the status of your request in real time. All UW-IT services will transition to this new tool—called UW Connect—by July 15. This initial change sets the foundation for future improvements including enhanced customer response.

IT TRAINING: Making Data Work for You—Free Workshops From UW-IT

Learn the tools and techniques to start using and making the most of University data through four free workshops for UW faculty and staff, all from UW-IT. These one- or two-hour courses include the Enterprise Data Warehouse, handling data to see trends and patterns, and Tableau software for creating dynamic visualizations of large data sets, with a one-day “fundamentals” class for the Tableau Desktop beginner. Hand-off to Registration Added to MyPlan, the UW’s Award-Winning Academic Planning Tool

New features in MyPlan allow UW students to build schedules, find classes that meet specific day and time criteria, and hand-off a schedule of classes to the UW's registration system. These high priority needs, identified by students, bring more of the information and tasks associated with preparing for registration into an integrated system. Also, on June 1, MyPlan was one of 11 winners selected from 215 entries to receive a 2014 Campus Technology Innovator award in the Student Systems and Services category.

New Tableau 8.2 Visualization Software Also for Macs

Tableau 8.2, released June 19, is the first version of this easy-to-use data analysis visualization tool to run natively on the Mac. It provides faster loading and new map designs and supports high resolution images, letting you display large data sets and communicate information in a powerful way. Tableau is available at no cost to full-time students as well as faculty teaching with Tableau, and at a reduced cost for all other faculty and staff. Learn more.
