Digital Audio Workshops

 

Making music, publishing podcasts, and creating other digital audio productions is more accessible then ever before. With various flexible software products, audio production for the amateur sound enthusiast is as easy is the click of a mouse button. Come to a workshop offered at the Odegaard Library Sound Studio or check out some of the online curriculum to learn more about working with digital audio.

Workshop Descriptions

Sound Studio Overview

This workshop covers the basic functionality of the Odegaard Library Sound Studio including available hardware and software and the standard procedures for reserving the space and available equipment. Students can expect to come out of this class with a functional understanding of the Sound Studio and an introduction to different production practices and techniques. This workshop is suggested for users with no prior experience with digital audio recording equipment and software.

Digital Audio Recording

This workshop introduces participants to the tools and techniques involved in recording and producing audio. It covers a wide range of techniques integral to the production of music, dialog, sound effects, and podcasts, tailored to individual students’ needs. Students can expect to come out of the class with an understanding, both conceptual and practical, of the recording/production process. This workshop is suggested for users with limited, but some prior experience with digital audio recording equipment and software. Recommended: Sound Studio Overview

Digital Audio Effects

This workshop introduces participants to a wide array of digital audio effects, demonstrated in Ableton Live. The workshop details numerous effects and their applications, and though Live is the software covered, the information presented is relevant and applicable to other audio production environments. Students can expect to come out of this class with a better understanding of the digital audio signal chain as well as a more concrete understanding of what each effect does and how it can be used. This workshop is suggested for users with prior experience in recording digital audio. Recommended: Digital Audio Recording

Synthesis

This workshop introduces participants to digital audio synthesis, demonstrated in Propellerhead Reason. The workshop details a wide range of synthesis techniques and their applications, and though Reason is the software covered, the information presented is relevant and applicable to other audio production environments. Students can expect to come out of the class with an understanding of the fundamental principles of synthesis, practical applications of those principles, and a better understanding of how to listen to and analyze synthesized sounds. This workshop is suggested for users with prior experience in recording digital audio. Recommended: Digital Audio Recording
