Change Settings to Correctly Import Grades

Canvas grade book includes two optional settings that modify the total score displayed in the interface; these settings do not change the score that is saved and available for import into GradePage for grade submission.

Treat ungraded as 0s: When this setting is selected, total scores shown to instructors in the grade book are calculated as if student assignments without a value received a zero score.  This setting only changes the values displayed in the UI.  Scores imported for grade submission do not include incomplete assignments.

If you want students to receive zero for incomplete assignments, you must actually enter a zero in each cell. Follow these steps to change settings and import correct scores:

  1. StepsActions
  2. From within your Canvas course, in the left-hand course navigation, click Grades.
  3. At the top of your Gradebook, next to Showing: All Sections, click the gear icon.
  4. Make sure that no check box appears next to Treat Ungraded as 0.
  5. Enter a zero score for each ungraded assignment (indicated by a hyphen).
  6. You can now import, convert, and submit your grades. Follow the instructions here: Import and convert Canvas grades for submission.

Muted assignments: Muting an assignment temporarily hides assignment grades from students.  Read more about muted assignments in Canvas.

Muted assignments in the Canvas grade book may cause problems when importing the Canvas total score. The scores for muted assignments are not included in the calculation of the imported score, although the total score looks correct in the Canvas grade book.

If you have muted assignments and you want to import Canvas total scores into the online grade submission form, please follow these steps to make sure you get accurate grades:

  1. StepsActions
  2. From within your Canvas course, in the left-hand course navigation, click Grades.
  3. At the top of your Gradebook, next to Showing: All Sections, click the gear icon.
  4. Identify muted assignments. These have a small icon next to the assignment title, showing a speaker with a red line through it.
  5. Unmute all muted assignments. To unmute an assignment, hover over the assignment title. A small down arrow appears. Click the arrow. A menu appears. Select Unmute Assignment. A dialog box appears asking you to confirm. Click the Unmute Assignment button.
  6. Repeat this process for all muted assignments.

Although the correct grades are shown in the Canvas grade book, there may be a lag between what is displayed in Canvas and what is sent to Catalyst. To ensure that the most recent grades are imported into Catalyst, you should:

  1. StepsActions
  2. Open your Canvas grade book and select Download score.csv from either the gear shaped menu (new grade book) or the Options menu (old grade book).

This forces the changed values to be updated. The most recently updated version will now be ready to import into the online grade submission form.

You can now import, convert, and submit your grades. Follow the instructions here: Import and convert Canvas grades for submission.
