Saving UW Email to Desktop Local Folders

IT Connect > Email > UW Email > Saving to Local Folders

When you leave the University or change your UW affiliation from student to alumni, you may want to save your existing email folders in your UW email account by moving them to your desktop email server. To accomplish this, follow these directions.

Moving Folders from UW Email to Outlook Express Local Folders

You can use these steps for both the MS Windows and Macintosh versions of Outlook Express.

In Outlook Express you have Local Folders as well as a folder for UW Email. These are listed in the left-hand column. You can drag and drop any message from any folder to any other folder in Outlook Express. The email you move from your UW Email account must go in a folder within Local Folders.

To move email messages from your UW Email to Local Folders:

    1. StepsActions
    2. In Outlook Express, highlight Local Folders in the left column.
    3. Select New ->Folder from the File menu.
    4. Enter the name of the new folder (e.g., uwnetidarchive).
    5. Highlight the folder (e.g., Inbox) in your UW Email account in the left column to display the messages in that folder.
    6. Point your mouse to a message in the right window.
    7. Hold down the left mouse button and drag the mouse pointer over the newly created (or an existing) folder under Local Mail.
    8. Release the left mouse button to drop the message into the folder.

To drag and drop multiple messages that follow each other:

    1. StepsActions
    2. Highlight all that you want to move.
    3. Point the mouse to the first message.
    4. Scroll down to the last message.
    5. Hold the shift key and click the left mouse button.
    6. Hold down the left mouse button and drag the mouse pointer over the newly created (or an existing) folder under Local Folders.
    7. Release the left mouse button to drop the message into the folder.

To drag and drop multiple messages that do not follow each other:

    1. StepsActions
    2. Highlight the first message.
    3. Point the mouse at the second message.
    4. Hold down the control key and click the left mouse button.
    5. Repeat for other messages.
    6. Hold down the left mouse button and drag the mouse pointer over the newly created (or an existing) folder under Local Folders.
    7. Release the left mouse button to drop the message into the folder.
