UW Windows Live Retiring
UW Windows Live will soon be replaced with a cloud-based version of UW Exchange (UW Exchange Online). As a result, no new UW Windows Live accounts can be created and all current UW Windows Live accounts have undergone a major transition. Alternative Options for Email
If you would like to create a cloud-based email account immediately, please use UW Google Apps. As an alternative, we expect to have a new cloud-based UW Exchange email system available to all faculty, staff, students and alumni soon (current estimate is winter quarter 2014).
Individuals needing an Exchange-based calendar or email service immediately may want to consider UW Exchange Local, which is available for a small monthly fee.
Why Change UW Windows Live?
Microsoft must make these changes to make way for our new cloud-based email system, UW Exchange Online. This new version of UW Exchange integrates with our UW Exchange Local service and will be available to all faculty, staff, students, and alumni. The entire process will take several months, and we will share a more detailed timeline as we receive more information.
All UW Windows Live accounts include a Microsoft Account (formerly "LiveID"). Microsoft Accounts are used to access Microsoft web applications like SkyDrive and Office Web Apps. We also utilize Microsoft Accounts for accessing IT Academy. These Microsoft accounts are still accessed using your email@example.com email address as a login, however, the account is maintained by Microsoft. Your UW Windows Live Password
Your UW Windows Live password is separate from your UW NetID password. If you forgot your UW Windows Live password or would like to change it, you can do so by logging in to the Manage UW Windows Live page with your UW NetID. There is an option at the bottom of that page to Change UW Windows Live Password.
When accessing UW Windows Live on the web, using a desktop mail client, or via a mobile device, use @myuw.net with your UW Windows Live password to login.

Email and Document Backup
When Windows Live email is deleted, those messages are moved to the recycle bin. Messages will stay in the recycle bin for 30 days before they are removed. Email removed in this way may be retrieved up to 14 days later, but after that, all deletions are permanent.
All Windows Live data is stored exclusively on Microsoft servers. The UW does not maintain any copies or backups for this data, and Microsoft cannot restore any data, including documents and calendar data, once it is permanently deleted.
Usage Policies and Guidelines
Data associated with UW Windows Live is subject to the same policies that regulate all other types of electronic records at the UW. As a result, contracts are in place with Microsoft to address many important legal, regulatory, and compliance issues.
Data stored using UW Windows Live is still considered a UW record. When using UW Windows Live, you are responsible for following the University's Data Security Standards.

Ending Your UW Windows Live Service
Your UW Windows Live ID cannot be deactivated. You can update your email forwarding so messages are no longer delivered to your UW Outlook Live account by going to the Change UW Email Forwarding page. If you need to disable your UW Outlook Live account, please contact UW Information Technology at email@example.com or 206-221-5000.
