Two new apps now available in UW Google Apps can broaden your ability to work collaboratively. With the Individual Storage app, you can now increase the storage quota for your account and you can pay for it using the Google Wallet app (ProCard compatible). These two apps provide one of the most frequently requested features for UW Google Apps—the ability to increase the space available in Google Drive and Gmail. Get information about UW Google Apps.

A powerful, easy-to-use data visualization tool, Tableau, is now available, with discounted licenses offered by UW-IT. With Tableau, you can easily create interactive graphics, reports and dashboards that allow you to ask questions and understand data in meaningful new ways. Tableau is available at no charge to faculty and full-time students through the Tableau for Teaching and Tableau for Students programs, and can be accessed on UWare. UW faculty and staff can continue to access popular Microsoft software—Office, Visio Premium, Project Professional, and Visual Studio—on all UW-owned computers at no cost to them under the UW’s renewed Microsoft Software Agreement, effective October 1, 2013 through September 30, 2014. The cost is covered by the Technology Recharge Fee. Staff and faculty also can download Microsoft Office for their home computers for a small fee. Thanks to the Student Technology Fee, students can continue to download Office 2010 or 2013 for PC, Office 2011 for Mac, and Windows 7 and 8. Get details on UWare.

UW faculty, instructors, and teaching assistants can get help preparing or moving courses into Canvas at UW-IT’s drop-in Canvas Studio Time sessions. Work with instructional technologists and others with Canvas expertise on October 28, November 25, and December 9, and every other Monday after that (except holidays), from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Odegaard Library, room 136.

New optional file storage/sharing and collaboration services from Microsoft are now available at no additional fee to UW students, faculty, and staff. UW SkyDrive Pro provides 25GB of cloud-based file storage. UW Lync offers online meetings (with voice, video, and screen-sharing), virtual whiteboards, instant messaging, presence indication, and more. Both services are HIPAA and FERPA compliant.

New apps have been added to UW Google Apps including Takeout, Translator Toolkit, Chrome Web Store, and Custom Search. Chrome Web Store has a wide range of extensions, themes, and apps designed for the Google Chrome browser, and Takeout allows you to export data from a number of Google products. Check out these additional apps and the others that are already available. Each app must undergo an enterprise risk assessment before UW-IT makes it available to the UW community. Support is provided by Google.

The UW’s licensing agreement with IBM for the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) has been renewed. The UW’s SPSS 21 annual subscription is available to UW faculty, staff, and all students, but must be renewed each year. The UW’s SPSS 19 perpetual license does not need to be renewed, but is available only to UW faculty, staff, and graduate students (not undergraduates). Both may be used on UW-owned or leased computers and personal home computers. UW-IT manages the license, and offers the software through UWare.
