UW SkyDrive Pro has been renamed UW OneDrive for Business to align with Microsoft’s rebranding of this online service for the UW community that offers file storage, collaboration and communication. If you’ve used UW SkyDrive Pro, all of your files are available on UW OneDrive for Business. Just sign in as usual.

UW faculty and staff can sign up for two free workshops on Tableau software, the UW’s enterprise data visualization platform, and learn how data can be displayed using this powerful data visualization tool. To see the possibilities, sign up for the two-hour Tableau Hands-on Introduction workshop. Then, with that background, register for the full-day hands-on Tableau Desktop Fundamentals class to learn the basic skills of creating data visualizations, including maps and geocoding. Both are offered twice a month.

A new centrally supported Enterprise Document Management System for the UW to digitize, store and manage electronic business documents is expected to be available by early 2015, supporting paperless workflow, increased efficiencies and cross-department collaboration, while reducing the UW’s environmental impact. The new technologies will enable secure access and improved compliance with record retention policies. A pilot phase with several collaborating departments is underway for 2014. This initiative is a partnership of Financial Management, Office of Planning & Budgeting, Office of Research, Records Management, School of Medicine, Student Life, UW Bothell and UW-IT.

UW units now can create and manage their own subscriptions to Windows Azure—an open cloud platform for storage, application building, virtual machines and more—at a significant discount (about 30 percent), with usage charged to a UW budget number. This new service is covered by the UW's enterprise HIPAA/FERPA-compliant protected health information contracts with Microsoft. Two new apps now available in UW Google Apps can broaden your ability to work collaboratively. With the Individual Storage app, you can now increase the storage quota for your account and you can pay for it using the Google Wallet app (ProCard compatible). These two apps provide one of the most frequently requested features for UW Google Apps—the ability to increase the space available in Google Drive and Gmail. Get information about UW Google Apps.

A powerful, easy-to-use data visualization tool, Tableau, is now available, with discounted licenses offered by UW-IT. With Tableau, you can easily create interactive graphics, reports and dashboards that allow you to ask questions and understand data in meaningful new ways. Tableau is available at no charge to faculty and full-time students through the Tableau for Teaching and Tableau for Students programs, and can be accessed on UWare. UW faculty and staff can continue to access popular Microsoft software—Office, Visio Premium, Project Professional, and Visual Studio—on all UW-owned computers at no cost to them under the UW’s renewed Microsoft Software Agreement, effective October 1, 2013 through September 30, 2014. The cost is covered by the Technology Recharge Fee. Staff and faculty also can download Microsoft Office for their home computers for a small fee. Thanks to the Student Technology Fee, students can continue to download Office 2010 or 2013 for PC, Office 2011 for Mac, and Windows 7 and 8. Get details on UWare.
