UW-IT Expands Evening Maintenance to Keep Classroom Equipment Working at UW Seattle

To ensure instructors have dependable teaching equipment in the more than 300 UW Seattle general-use classrooms, UW-IT has expanded its maintenance program to run until midnight. Projectors, speakers, microphones, laptop cables and desktop computers now can be continually tested, repaired or replaced, and ready for use the next day. Instructors have expressed appreciation for “understanding the importance of functioning classroom equipment” and the “fast response” to their emails. UW-IT’s Classroom Technology & Events unit provides this service, which includes equipment tutorials for instructors teaching night classes as well as after-hours help.

Find out more about the free technology, discounts and services available to you as a UW student at the Technology Expo on September 24, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in Odegaard Undergraduate Library. Visit booths from several UW units, and also from Microsoft, Tableau, Apple, Parallels and more. Enter the student drawing for a chance to win prizes like iPad Minis, an Xbox One and a Dell Venue 7 tablet. The first 1000 attendees will receive a free T-shirt.

U Drive Electronic File Storage Quota Doubled to 10GB

Individual quotas for U Drive, a personal UW file storage service, are being increased to 10GB per user to optimize resources, enable new uses and meet additional demands for space. U Drive, managed by UW-IT, offers UW students, faculty and staff general-purpose, backed-up electronic file storage that is accessible anywhere, anytime. The previous quota was 5GB. The Student Technology Fee Committee funds the student quota; the cost for the employee quota is supported by the Technology Recharge Fee. Get more information about U Drive.

Keep Laptops, Mobile Devices and Equipment Safe: Tips, Registration, Insurance

Protect your new laptop or mobile device by registering your personal electronic equipment with UW Police to help in theft recovery, and by reading their crime prevention safety tips. The UW Office of Risk Management also provides loss control advice for laptops and mobile devices. University departments can buy low-cost coverage for owned, leased, or borrowed equipment (computer, office, audio-visual, and lab) used for UW work through Risk Management’s Equipment Insurance program.

UW Tower Data Center Now ENERGY STAR Certified

The UW Tower Data Center is one of just 27 data centers in the country to have earned a 2013 ENERGY STAR Certification from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. This recognizes reduced power consumption, lowered carbon footprint, and slower growth of future power needs. The Tower Data Center, operated by UW-IT, provides managed space, power and cooling of critical infrastructure supporting IT departments campus-wide. The UW is one of only two universities in the country to have ever received this certification.
