ATL - Quickstart: ZoomText

ZoomText is a screen magnifier that also provides limited speech output for people with low vision. If you need to use ZoomText outside of the Access Technology Lab and other locations on campus, ZoomText is available on all UW Technology computer lab workstations. The Access Technology Lab also has a ZoomText Keyboard that has the basic ZoomText functions built into the keyboard.
Starting ZoomText
- StepsActions
- Click the start button in the lower left-hand corner of the screen.
- Click Accessibility Technolgy.
- Click ZoomText.
(Pressing <Ctrl> + <ALT> + <Z> will also launch ZoomText)
Using ZoomText
Magnification:
- Access the program controls by right clicking on the letter Z icon in the System Tray.
- Magnifying and window options can be accessed by left clicking on the letter z icon in the lower right hand corner of the screen.
- Move the mouse to change the focus of the magnification.
- Use the + and - magnifying glass icons to increase or decrease magnification levels.

- Deactivate ZoomText press <Alt> + <Delete>
- Increase magnification press <Alt> + <Numpad Plus>
- Decrease magnification press <Alt> + <Numpad Minus>
- Scroll the zoom window press <Alt> + <Arrow keys>
- User Interface press <Ctrl> + <Shift> + <U>
Document Reading:
Click on the open book icon in the control panel. Single words or entire documents can be read by using the play/pause (press again to stop reading) and other buttons in the upper left-hand corner of the toolbar to begin or pause reading a document. Selected portions can also be read by highlighting a section of the document. It is also possible to highlight or magnify words or documents as they are read.
Quitting ZoomText
Press <ALT> + <F4> when ZoomText is the active application.
Help
To access Help, click on the help menu or press <ALT> + <F1>.
